Low yields with Q21Q21 and Cyb's Hybrid Salt Tek

Hey everyone!

After a 10 year hiatus and not being able to reactivate my login from the old forums, I've finally got around to re-registering after months of lurking. Here's my "failed" attempts at Q21Q12's tek and Cyb's Hybrid Salt Tek. Feeling a little disheartened and wonder if anyone can see any issues?

Years ago, I only tried Q21Q21's Fluffy White Funfest tek and had good yields and beautiful fluffiness every time with the thick porridge sludge basified mix consistency.

This time when redoing the Q21Q21 tek, I only got 200mg from a 2 x 50g MHRB batches with multiple pulls!

The only differences between now and 10 years earlier are:
  • Different MHRB vendor
  • I used pre-powdered bark (I always used to buy shredded and grind it up)
  • Used wide pyrex dish covered in clingfilm (now I use metal lidded glass jars due to space)
  • I also used Colemans Premium Camp Fuel (clean evap) which was a first for me (used Swan lighter fluid back in the UK from what I remember)
I did one mix with porridge-like consistency, and the other damp and crumbly. These soup batches are several months old now and have oxidised and rock hard. One smells faintly of DMT - the other just of naptha. I've left these for now as not sure what to do with them after multiple failed pulls, so decided to try Cyb's Hybrid Salt Tek.

First attempt at Cyb's Hybrid Tek
  • 50g MHRB used
  • Different MHRB vendor to above
  • Bought shredded instead of pre-powdered MHRB and ground up in coffee grinder
  • Used Zippo Premium Lighter Fluid instead of Colemans Premium Camp Fuel

Followed Cyb's tek using recommended amounts (acid soak with vinegar was around 2.5 hours). When I added the saline solution, and later the lye, I used warm (not piping hot) temps.

I didn't have a 1 litre glass bottle so divided the mix into 2 x 750ml bottles and used 25ml naptha in each (vs. the 50ml in one bottle)

Results so far (3 completed pulls):
First pull - came out looking milky, left in freezer 8 days and yielded 200mg of off white crystals - hurrah!
+8 days - did second pull reusing naptha from Pull 1, yellow naptha colour, didn't turn milky after blow so evaporated by half - after 12 hours in freezer, yielded only 60mg of yellow wax (no crystals)
+10 days - did third pull using clean naptha, pulled yellow but went milky when I blew on it. After 19 hours yielded only 70mg of yellow/orange wax.
+11 days - fourth pull, clean naptha used, pulled yellow and went milky when blew - just put into freezer

I appreciate the plant oils are probably getting pulled because I left the naptha after Pull 1 in the mix for 9 days, and I also allowed the naptha to sit for longer in in the separation phases for Pulls 2 and 3, planning for a Re-X later.

But with that said, after a wash, maybe I'm only going to have something like 220mg after 3 pulls on 50g MHRB!?

The pulls are rather time consuming since I didn't have the mix up to the narrow bottle neck. For the 4th pull this morning, I've put the mix into a 1.5 litre bottle and added 50ml fresh naptha. Doesn't help with the pulls, but wanted to see if combining all the mix in one would make any difference. I use a long 10ml glass pipette.

I don't mind the extra fiddliness with transferring naptha from jar to jar to make sure not any basified mix in there IF the yields are good (as was way more time consuming than Q2121) but now it's looking highly unlikely I'll get anywhere near 1%...let alone 1.5-2%.

I will continue to do a fifth pull to see where it gets me anyhow.

I know it could be the quality of the bark with low actives, but the fact that this has happened with both Q21Q21 and Cyb's tek using bark from different vendors (powered vs. shredded then powdered), I'm not convinced. I'm not getting 100% of the naptha out either in the pulls (80% maybe) so will account for some loss but I don't think that much?

As for solvents, I can't get anything other than Zippo and Colemans as far as naptha goes. There's no D-Limonene available, though I've seen a online vendor selling touluene (I don't fancy that though) and "Xylene RPE ACS ISO MIXTURE" (Xylol Chemically Clean) (cheaper than Zippo ml for ml) but not sure 100% sure if I could use that.

I will add that the vinegar I'm using is 6% white vinegar (you cannot get 5% here) and I use distilled water. For Q2121's tek, I also made sure I used the correct lime, and for Cyb's non-deionised salt. Freezer is on lowest setting (-15C) so that's not the issue.

As I said, I followed Cyb's tek as closely as possible and without any screw ups that I could see, but can anyone see anything in my method that could explain the low yields?

And any ideas for my next attempt? For example, repeating Cyb's tek and doing a longer acid soak?

Or going back to Q21Q21's, this time using different lighter fluid to see if the Coleman's was somehow responsible?

It's difficult for me to get MHRB so wondering how best to use the remaining 200g MHRB I have as really hoping to experiment making different changa blends if I can get the yields. I have a menstrum in the making ,and just made 10x enhanced caaapi leaf using the water boil method.

Thank you as always - you guys continue to be a fantastic learning resource!

Method's fine, the bark's just weak - we used up all the good stuff ten years ago /jk(?)

MHRB doesn't really contain plant oils - the oily stuff has been found to consist mostly of DMT polymers. Long contact time with base seems to promote their formation:

You'll likely boost your yield with xylene pulls on the 'spent' soup. Just bear in mind, you'll need to do a mini A/B on the xylene to get the DMT back out. Freeze precipitation won't work on xylene, and evaporating it both stinks and is a waste.

The difference between 6% vinegar and 5% is trivial. Anyhow, if it were important, diluting it down with distilled water is as easy as taking 50mL of it and making it up to 60 mL - scale the volumes in opposite proportions to the percentages, in other words.
