Mental Preparation for the first trip

Migrated topic.

Rising Star
Greetings - I have recently become consumed with the notion of this chemical and it's power. The trip reports I've read, along with McKenna's speeches on the subject have me completely sold on the idea of experiencing this journey myself. This substance seems to hold so much potential for unlocking the mind's repressed potential.

That said, I have very little psychedelic experience. My main drug of choice over the last 7 or so years has been MDMA and it has had profound effects on my personality, but I feel like I have nothing left to learn from it. I have experienced both mushrooms and LSD, but only a handful of times combined (less than five, all together). With both, I had decent trips, but never found much insight in using them, and usually just wanted the effects to finally wear off after x number of hours into it. I suppose I missed the closeness found on MDMA with these more internally experienced chemicals.

For the record, I am definitely NOT interested in just seeing visuals and being f-ed up for 15 minutes. I want the deeper understanding of life, communication with alternate-dimension entities, the transportation to other realms, all of it... as I get more and more experienced. I have matured, you could say, in my views on drugs and want to move past the "recreational" use into a more spiritual, educational and purposeful usage.

So, my question is this: what can a person do, if anything, to prepare for the first DMT trip with such little psychedelic experience going into it? Would it be advisable to build up experience with higher and higher doses of psilocybin to sort of ease into the intensity of DMT? Or would it make more sense just to start with low doses of DMT and work towards the breakthrough? I do know, that one of the reasons I disliked psilocybin and LSD was that even when I wanted to regain control of my thoughts, they wouldn't let me (whereas with MDMA, I always had control throughout the highest of peaks). I know part of the DMT experience is to give in completely, and I don't know if I'm mentally prepared to do so.

Sorry for the long-winded question - I've been intensely interested in this topic for the last several days and am terribly excited for the day when I begin my first extraction. Essentially, I'm looking for advice on what to do between now and when that day comes.

Hi.
I personally haven't had any deep profound experiences on DMT, I tried it over 10 times, in a different range of doses, but never got any further then just the pure visual aspect of the trip, wich is really sad, cause the substance has so much more potential, wich i am craving for so bad, unfortunatly, the DMT spirits have'nt yet invited me in, and left me only at the dororsteps of their world.

When I smoke DMT immediatly after a couple of hits I start to experience change in colour, even if it's dark, still everything gets a sudden glow and intensified colour.
When I then proceed to close my eyes I see all kind of wonderful patterns, really ultrafine and complex caleidoscopic patterns wave into eachother, sometimes it looks like there is some kind of a tunnel spinning with a bright light in the center of it, i guess one should be sucked into that tunnel from what i have read, but that never happens, i'm just stuck with the patterns.

No insights have i ever obtained from it, LSD and mushrooms have showed me different new paths to walk, DMT only gave me a deep feeling of warm love, that's it.

You can't compare it with LSD or mushroom trips, it does not mess with your mind, in fact, your thinking process is not altered much, so i don't thing it is possible to go bad on DMT, quite the opposite, if you feel low before the trip, you will feel a lot better, and relaxed after it ended, there is no need to be afraid from it, it is probably the most gentle psychedelic one can do, i speak from personal experience, so i don't know about others, i also haven't met any entities ever, and haven't entered another world either.

I hope this helps.

As a disclaimer I should mention that I don't have much experience with the spice yet BUT....

Having experienced a little of what it has to offer I'd say getting used to the type of state via increasing dosages of psilocybin would be a good start, there are enough similarities for it to be useful. Secondly, I'd say start with low doses of dmt and work up, everyone has a difference level of tolerance to things and low doses will help you get comfortable with it and make it easier to let go on higher ones. Finaly I'd suggest a few exercises before you blast off, namely chi kung (or other breathing exercises you're happy with) and some light sretching and relaxation to get your body nice and loose and calm (not absolutely necessary by any means, I just found it would have been beneficial for me).

I don't think that there is anything that can truly prepare you for a breakthrough DMT dose, but having the proper respectful attitude about it can oftem make the experience less stressfull and more enjoyable/get more out of it. I've taken moderate dosages of shrooms, LSD, 2c-i, DPT, etc. but they are in a different league than DMT, IMO(except maybe DPT). Slowly increasing DMT dosage and making sure that I had the proper set/setting was the route that I decided to go. It sounds like you are taking the proper approach/attitude with this amazing molecule.

Thanks for the replies! I'll definitely treat this thing with respect. The more I read about it, the more it sounds like far more than just your average chemical. Not to be taken lightly for sure.

I suppose what my plan for the first time is to have the correct set (mind) and setting (environment) before starting anything. i spose most importantly is fear, or lack of it. Let go of all previous influences on your sense of fear, what fear is and how you process the feeling.

Strassman's research comments that people with a background in meditation tend to have less anxiety in general and better experiences from memory.

From personal and friends experience meditation training is invaluable in the experience [and is espc handy in dissolution of ego experiences and you are already familiar with it] (sort of).

Spend 20-30 mins before can also help soothe pre flight jitters.
cheers

check the FAQ, it has some tips about set and setting :)

SWIM likes to smoke small dose first to remember how it went, and then an hour latter take a full dose, because otherwise its so much of a shock from straight reality to hyperspace that he has a hard time remembering anything afterwards, and he is more distracted. When he smokes a bit before he has an easier time because he remembers how his heart accelerates a bit before, he can concentrate more on important things and so on

SWIM doesnt meditate, but it might be useful for some people indeed.. In any case SWIM likes to just sit for 5 mins and try to mentalize something good
