I do not know where to post this, so I took a guess.

Maybe I missed some information, or I overlooked it, and it has already been explained.

If a thread is opened I see on the left side of every post the username and an avatar. Under that it says ‘Merits'.

What does this mean and what does the number represent?

It's not public yet as Trav is tweaking the settings, but it's a basic system of showing appreciation towards other members. Interacting with a thread gives you a few points, and you can donate points to others to show them some love.

It was never officially announced, I think just because it's more like a fun addition than an actual feature.

They're just a "currency" you get for participating in the site, each interaction gives you some. Then, you can donate them to others to show appreciation (and get 25% cashback on your donation).

So I wouldn't take any merit numbers too seriously. Maybe if it's high it means they should donate more

I think the main idea is to have some fun and show appreciation to others.

If you go here and click in your merits number, a dialog to donate pops up.

However, do not donate any to me! As you can see, I was having some fun donating back and forth with @Varallo and getting that 25% cashback to ever bigger numbers So I have way too much right now. I will donate most of it tomorrow
