Movies with a meaning

Migrated topic.

Rising Star
I don't own a TV and i rarely watch any movies or series on my PC as I find most of them to be counterproductive in my personal growth. I am tired of Hollywood and the impact it has had on the whole world. However, I often want to watch something interesting, but I have trouble finding it.

Do you guys have any good suggestions on what movies to watch? I am looking for anything that is meaningful and that is able to learn me something. Spirituality, science, shamanism, psychology, philosophy and anything in these lines is interesting. It really doesn't matter if it is a documentary, a feature film or a short film.

Any good suggestions out there? I hope this thread can grow to contain a large number of great films! :)

BARAKA is a good one , excellent soundtrack and the footage was shot in 70MM. Gorgeous Film that says alot without a single word.

I agree with :

I Heart Huckabees
Fight Club
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

They're possibly in my top 5, and all pertinent to the psychedelic mind. Staying on topic I would add :

Where the Wild Things Are (For kids, but all the kids movies should be like this. Beautiful.)
Naked Lunch (Heavy but tasty.)
Existenz (Light but filling.)
Spirited Away (Awesome anime.)

Love:
Man on a Wire
Touchez Pas Au Grisbi
anything by Jan Svankmajer
Oldboy (warning, violent)
Kontroll (so so good)
Papillon
The King of Masks
Let the Right One In
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

TV
Spaced (BBC)
The Wire

Here are some of my favorites that deal either directly or indirectly with the nature of the mind, life and death, and reality:

Open Your Eyes
The Lathe of Heaven
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Total Recall
Being John Malkovich
Matrix
Jacob’s Ladder
The Nines
Coraline (animated)
Contact
Pan’s Labyrinth
Brainstorm
Minority Report

Hi guys,

When it comes to tv shows I'm big fan of anything which come out from David Simon's pen: The Wire, The Corner, Homicide: Life on the Street...(HBO)

I enjoy British dark comedy tv shows too: Monkey Dust, Nighty night, The League of Gentlemen an so on

In movies, I'm recently looking for gnostic sect philosophy reference...I enjoyed 'Waking Life' very much, Pleasantville, Groundhog Day and so on

For a long time I'm in love in Asian cinema and tv (anime), especially work of Kenji Kamiyama: 'Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 1,2' (which in my modest opinion is best cyberpunk ever made), Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. But other are great as well: Berserk, Ergo proxy...
In movies it's work of Chan-wook Park, Ki-duk Kim's and anything great (I think asian cinema is on 'the roll')

Big surprise came from Europe in gangster movie genre by 'Prophet' and 'Gomorrah'
From Hollywood it is Scorsese's 'Shutter Island' and Nolan's 'Inception' this year

As long as we've got Eternal Sunshine and Being John Malkovich on this list, let's put their entheogenic brother Adaptation on the list ... just don't go off to Florida looking for the rare Ghost Orchid until you research it fully.

Just watching Meryl Streep brush her teeth tripping is worth the 2 hours.

Blueberry directed by Jan Kounen is one of my favorites by far
although you dont exactly know if they are taking peyote or ayahuasca

Zublido, thanks for bringing up the underappreciated work of Ki-duk Kim... his incredible "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter ... and Spring" belongs on this list:
"In the midst of the Korean wilderness, a Budhist master patiently raises a young boy to grow up in wisdom and compassion, through experience and endless exercises. Once the pupil discovers his sexual lust ....(IMDB) And then there's that mindblowing ending...

My mind is very clear today, here are a few more, new and old(er):
1. Kurosawa's Soviet-made, Oscar winning Dersu Uzala:
"In 1902, a Russian army expedition is assigned to explore Siberia under the command of Captain Vladimir Arseniev. He befriends the hunter Dersu Uzala and invites him to guide the explorers through the stark forest up to Khanka Lake. Along their journey, Arseniev discovers that Dersu Uzala is a man with a beautiful soul and they become close friends ..." (IMDB)

2. The beautiful The Civilization of Maxwell Bright:
"After a series of bad relationships, a man orders a mail order bride and receives more than he bargained for..." (IMDB) Why indie films can be so damned good.

3. Here'e another great recent Korean film (which for you younger, hipper, female Nexians stars the Asian singer/actor Rain) I’m a Cyborg, but that’s OK:

I never appreciated films until I (or was it SWIM?) had a few trips under the belt. I still recall the event, in college in 1970, it was Fellini’s Juliet of the Spirits, which itself is a pretty trippy. During the showing, the projectionist must have been tripping too, because the projector broke and the film froze at the dissolve between these two scenes, and no one did anything about it…due to the heat of the lamp, the film started to bubble, which looked pretty cool on the screen, and for a moment I was thinking, what is Fellini trying to say here…..?
