My Bufo alvarius, have stopped moving....

Migrated topic.

I have had 2 Buford alvarius for about 5 years now. I'm afraid they have finally died. They are both stiff, above ground, cold, and nit moving. The female was moving very slowly yesterday, but like the male hasn't moved in a couple hours. I'm hoping they are hibernating. It is winter and they have been eating less and getting more sluggish. I really hpe they are hibernating, but this is the first time, since I've had them.

I dipped them in water, then buried them under the mulch with their head uncovered. What do I do?

Toads do burmate, but they don't hibernate. Not too much different, but still different.

I think a little bit more info is needed to judge what could be the problem. Substrate, temperatures, diet, supplements, etc.

I've never owned a bufo alvarius but I am however very experienced with amphibians and reptiles so I can probably help you.

I am not in any way experienced with reptiles or amphibians, but I am quite experienced in taking care of animals. In my experience, I've never had two die at the same time. Even when sick, they don't both just shut down. I suppose it's possible, but it seems to me something else is going on.

Good luck! I hope your toad buddies are ok!

Herps such as those tend to hibernate from September to to November, or possibly even later depending on altitude and latitude. Is your environment for them temperature controlled? If so you 'could' try bumping up the temps slightly to see if that has an effect on them.

Hope all is well.

Yeah why not have a vet take a look at them?
Any news on how they are? Have they shown any
signs of life yet?

Makes me wonder what got to them. Do winters get cold
out where you live? Perhaps the temperature dropped too
low for them?

Other than hypothermia I can only think of dehydration &
disease as the possible causes.
