My digital scale is singing...

Migrated topic.

Rising Star
Well I don't know if this is the right section.
I see a topic about digital scales in the suppliers section but it is out of the nursery.
Since we have almost the same digital scale (I understand this from the pics in the teks and from reading the forums) I have a question for you :)

I have just received today my new mg scale.
It seems to work nice but, when it's on, I can hear a faint sound.
A sort of buzz. Really faint and low but plenty stuck into my ears, especially in the tranquility of my room.

Is this sound right?
Or my scale is going to blow up? :)

Just trying to figure out if it is defective and if I have to start the process to ask for a replacement.

Thank you all.

Um well I guess it's really easy for you to test. Just weight some things you know the mass to

like a paperclip is 1.4g on average
a drop squeezed from a standard plastic dropper is usually 30-40mg
100ml of water weighs roughly 100g

if you're off, replace the scale
otherwise for all practical purposes, it's good

my scale personally does not buzz (it's a different model), but the mg scales at my university do, and they work just fine

100mL H2O weighs exactly 100g (at 4*C).

Yeah- I have the same scale with the same 'electronic buzz'.

It's always been accurate. Sounded like that since I bought it.

I have the same scale and it doesn't buzz. I couldn't tell you what the noise is but as long as it weighs properly it shouldn't be an issue.
Make sure you weigh the 10g weight they give you with the scale. This will help you determine if it's working properly.
Just turn it off manually when you're finished weighing.

Hmm I was thinking of buying the same scale.

I'd appreciate it if you'd let us (me) know if you're satisfied with it!

I have that scale, it's reliable, works great, easy to use, has a ton of different modes (make sure to set it on the right one   ) and is great bang for your buck, so to say.

Thanks for the replies!
Actually I feel better.
My scale wasn't blow up till now (thanks psychosisdoses!) and the point that other digital scales are humming too keeps me safe on the reliability of my purchase.
And btw not all my friend are able to hear this sound.

A quick review.
It's really small but the max load is 20gr so you cant put a forest on it anyway.
And there is no need to have mg precision above 20gr, I think.

It needs to warm up a little, to give a precise reading.
30seconds is more than enough.
This, btw, should be a good rule for every scale in the mg range.

The gummy feet of the scale are not so stable.
But the Leather Pouch included in the box is perfect to resolve the problem.
Simply put the pouch under the scale and you will have a good stability.

Its reliability depends over the calibration weight included in the box.
But several measures are consistent in time (are always the same).
For now it has a great repeatability.

For 18USD with free shipping it's a great purchase :)

EDIT:
keep on eye on EM interferences...
If my Pc an my monitor are on, even if the scale is far 1mt or more, the reading jumps like a cangaroo.

I'm about to order that same scale. I'm also ordering a cheap 0.1 - 2000g (2Kg) scale for weighing out my MHRB... I just got 6Kg, lol. I'm sure I was bidding against someone on here. It got fucking intense. Kept raising me!

Anywho, I'm really glad you made this thread, because the deal almost seemed too good to be true.

don't worry , mine's been doing that for 2 years already. I have the same one.

yep same scale - same song, always done it - always accurate - very nice scale actually - i really like it alot.

very interesting you mention that your friends cant hear it.. alot of electronic devices emit noises i can hear and feel that others dont..

well, during meditation I hear the humming of electricity (derivation boxes, switches and cables themselves). Even if every device in the room is unplugged.
And sometime is so loud to be annoying.
It's just a matter of ear sensitivity I suppose.
Or, as told, "The quieter you become, the more you can hear"

BTW I have a HUGE follow up.
I think my digital scale is defective. And I'm going to have a replacement back.

Yesterday it works fine. Today I can not hear the humming anymore and the scale seems crazy.
It can not reach a stable reading.
If I put the 10g weight, the display show 10.000.
Then it starts raising up. A mg every second, more or less.
10.001 ... 10.002... and so on.
The scale seems don't find a stable point. And keep raising up until it switch off by itself.

Obviously I tried the common things.
Replace batteries, calibrate the scale, avoid interference, stable setting... but nothing.

I have to change it.
I'll take the same model. There are a lot of good feedback in this thread, I suppose is just a problem with my scale.

Might just be a faulty connection which is causing the inaccuracy of the reading and the noise too. I do circuit bending with battery powered musical toys and the buzzing sound is very common if you don't solder a join properly. Either way, get y'erself a replacement!

Oh, and welcome to the Nexus! :d

The sound is from the display's backlight. Watches and alarm clocks with the backlights make the same high pitched sound. My neighbor's scale also makes the high pitched sound and is accurate.
