My friend needs help with rainbow serpents freeze precip

My friend is using rainbowserpents A/B tek for the 2nd time. Last time he evapped about a little less than 1/3 of the naptha, threw it in the freezer and w/in 24 hours had precipitated everything out, but waited the reccomended 36 hours before pulling it out of the freezer. This time he evapped 2/3(maybe a little more) of the naptha, and it's been sitting in a cooler with dry ice(much much colder than a freezer), and there appears to be a decent ammount of spice precipitated out so far, however, the majority of it is floating in the solvent. Before they looked like snowflakes, this look like smaller balls. How is he to separate this when he pours off the naptha? Is it by chance, too cold? Did he evap to much off before freezing it? He's sure more will precip out, b/c it certainly doesn't look like his projected yield. But the main question is how is he to separate/filter it?

I suppose he could. He's just never filtered before. Last time, everything was stuck to the pan, he poured off the excess naptha, let the rest in the pan evaporate off, so the spice could dry, and scraped up. should he just pour through a filter, and let it dry out? Will no spice get lost in the pores of the flter? Is a metal coffee filter fine enough?

hey.... in the experience of those who I have had the most contact with, using filter paper has had mixed results. Apparently this procedure can work very well for some, but most testers I've talked to have had trouble with crystals melting into the paper, with naphtha not going through the paper fast, and with spills. That's one of the big reasons why the rainbowserpent tek doesn't have filter papers. If you can, either get another glass container or pour out of that one slowly. It might take the second container, but eventually you should be able to pour out the naphtha while leaving the crystals stuck to one of the containers.

my cat loves doing freeze precip's. once he separates the nap off into a jar it goes straight into the bottom of freezer (saran wrap sealed). 8 or so hours later he takes a knife to scrape the insides of the jar to knock loose crystals that don't come loose with stirring. then it is quickly poured through a coffee filter in a funnel. the nap is put back into the original jar to swish around again to be poured through the filter again to get the remaining spice. after he's satisfied with his collection he sets the filter on a couple folded up paper towels to soak up excess nap. and then knocks the spice into a flat glass dish and scrape the paper with a knife. then he chops up and spreads out the spice in the dish to help the nap evap from it. once it quits smelling of nap and smells of spice he usually waits one more hour before gathering it up for storage.

If someone were to perform an extraction and freeze precipitate, what would be the reasons behind no crystals forming? The spice did make its way out of the naptha however a clear yellow oil is all that remained.

There should be no problem with loosing your spice in the coffee filter. After the naptha has dried and you have flicked and scraped all the spice you can get at, do not throw the filter away. Simply recycle the paper by putting it back in your acid bath. Any residual spice remaining on the filter will be reclaimed with your next extraction.
