drano professional strength kitchen crystals Vs RED DEVIL it would appear to SWIM that red devil is outta reach locally (less internet order) is there any problem with the drano caustic soda substitute?

hey mate welcom to the forums. just a few guidelines you might wanna follow, saves people alot of time and stops clogging of the forums. try asking all your questions in one thread, rather than making 3. if there simple extraction questions post em in the sticky up the top. - just find something which is 100% naoh or sodium hydroxide. doesnt have to be red devil, but red devil is popular cause its easily availabe to usa and is 100% naoh. go to the hardware store and look for caustic soda

thank you all for your input, and sorry about the multipal posting, i am seriously posting for SWIM .. and once I post .. there comes another question, and another question, and another question! ... sorry in advance for all of that I will tone down my postings as you can tell I am very excited myself at the ramifications of the questions if things get worked out properly i hope you can understand.

The only NaOH-only product I've found here is Roebic's Pro Strength Drain Opener. I tried looking for a powdered product in several stores, but none had any that were pure. Anyone know how to substitute this liquid NaOH for the powder?

Look for a cylindrical plastic bottle with a yellow label that says "Crystal Drain Opener."

According to the MSDS i'm looking at it says 28% liquid NaOH. I would assume the other 72% is water since it makes no mention of any other ingredient, in which case you could use less water, and i'd just test your PH till you get it right. BTW the liquid isn't colored or anything is it?

Drano is anhydrous HCl and Al flakes. It 'fizzes' as HCl goes into solution and interacts with the Al ions, producing hydrogen gas (flammable) and AlCl3. Thus... it's not even on the right track, no base (OH groups) at all. However, a cool at-home experiment: Need: Muriatic acid/Drano crystals Water Al foil Balloon 20 oz bottle. 1. Pour diluted HCl (bout 30% HCl) into bottle about halfway. 2. Add tiny balls of Al foil. 3. Place balloon over lid and allow it to fill with H gas. 4. Place outside AWAY from people/pets/buildings. 5. Make a fairly long torch (a meter long or more). 6. Light balloon. 7. ??? 8. PROFIT!

It was my understanding sodium hydroxide reacts with aluminum to produce the "fizz" in most drain cleaners (incl. Drano). The "fizz" being caused by the production of hydrogen gas due to the reaction of the base (NaOH), [i:f240b78ea5]not HCl[/i:f240b78ea5], with the aluminum.
