Odd GT appearance + question

Firstly, is it possible to over humidify? I think I got my fruits a little too wet because the caps in particular are very mushy/soggy. I didnt particularly spray them heavily directly, just super airy fine mist, but I did spray the top of the FC heavily and I think it rained down consistently onto my caps. A few of the caps have some, what i hope is just spotty bruising from what I think to be large water droplets falling on them and not that theyre ruined from some bad mold. The bruising does appear very dark blue, almost black. There is no odd smell.

Secondly, the caps are very very inconsistent in physical appearance. I used spores from a supplier who turns out Shroomery said wasnt very trustworthy anymore because they sent many customers incorrect orders, but I wanted to give them a shot since I bought them and I just wanted to see if I could properly sterilize jars myself on my own PF tek attempt before using another malaysian syringe, which I previously had amazing success with on my first grow ever.
These are Golden Teacher, which I found incredibly difficult to pin and very difficult to get any growth once pinned. That was why I heavily sprayed to get it super super humid in my FC in hopes it worked. It sure did, they didnt pin heavily but 2 cakes produced mega shrooms. The biggest cap being 83mm in diameter and its 27g wet. There are a few others just slightly smaller than that.

So my question is, why do some of these caps look not consistemt? Some are dark and scaly, some are pale as albinos and spotless. Very not GT looking. My previous grow of Malaysian cubes all looked very consistent, golden rust colored caps and all scaly.

Can you give us more detail on your process?

I assume that the appearance issue is due to the use of a multispore syringe. To have all of the fruits look the same, I recommend isolating a monoculture on agar.

Mist and fan for evaporation, don't just mist. Standing water on the fruits will cause most of the problems you've described IMO.
 
I do fan 3-5 times daily. I guess I was just over misting also. I dont have a fan constantly blowing for fear of kicking up contaminants and also for drying out the FC too quickly. I did try a fan in my previous grow and the room I work in is about 30% humidity, so a fan dried the FC out in less than 30 minutes.

Straightforward PF Tek with BRF cakes. Good point though on a multispore syringe. I didnt think of that.
 
Regarding fruiting humidity, here is what I have in my notes:

"We're trying to achieve a humidity level of 82-92%. Look for light condensation on the walls with occasional dripping down the sides. If there is heavy condensation and lots of dripping, it is 100% and too much."

I am guessing that 100% humidity occurred, and drops of water fell from the ceiling down onto the fruits.
 
No I never used a timer, just an oscillating fan on low setting.

These are still very very low yields Im experiencing. Not that Im disappointed, but in comparison Id say its very below average.
 
You may have been fanning and spraying excessively. Next time, try fanning only once daily or every other day. It takes some time for the mushroom to deplete all the fresh air in a fruiting chamber, but fanning depletes the ambient humidity quickly, especially if room humidity is at 30%. When misting, try not to mist onto the substrate or casing, as it may damage the mycellium and pins. Instead mist onto the walls of the fruiting chamber.

To expand a little on this comment, the reason 100% humidity is a bad thing afaik is not only the water dripping on the fruits, but the fact that there is no room in the atmosphere for moisture from the substrate to evaporate, which is key to good growth.

The reason for the odd appearance is indeed most likely due to a multispore syringe. Or possibly weakened genetics causing more mutants to pop up.

Do we want to grow mushrooms or play post offices with idiotic ideas like fish tanks and wafting air ?

If we want mushrooms that all look the same why not just ask monasanto ? Why should mushrooms all look the same ?

Could it be that we were so stupid as to isolate stains in a petri dish and because of that ended up with things with " weakened genetics " ?


GOD tek ---- >

Stop playing post offices . Throw the fish tank away . Throw the petri dishes away . Get some clean spores and sterilise some grain in a PF type container = one that the cake can just drop out of when its grown though . Spay the spores over the substrate . Then get a big mini greennhouse from a garden center . Put caseing on the bottom . A few grown through cakes on top of that . Then either put a preasure cooker full of sterilised grain on top of that and case it / or just case it . Leave the lid open a little to allow gas exchange and to control the humidity . Dont over water . Mushrooms cant swim and contamination often likes it warm and WET .

That way we dont have to waft contamination into our contamination trap fish tank . The gas exchange happens naturaly and so does the humidity regulation = opening and closeing the lid . Strangely enough that way the most contamination is kept out = The bigest sources of contamination are YOU , your hair and your breath ...... and containers / fish tanks with no lids because again strangely enough air transports spores .

OR if you are lucky enough to live in an area where Psilocybe Cyanescens grows grow them outdoors = VERY easy and mega harvests . MUCH easyer , much stronger and MUCH more reliable than cubensis .

Or if you want just play post offices .

That'll work, I think Humble just needs to not get the fruits so wet :p

HumbleTraveler, pics will usually help us straighten a lot out. What looks normal or abnormal to you could look the opposite to someone with a lot of experience. And again with multispore you never know what you'll get.

High temps can cause humidity to get too high, but if temps are low you'll have water sitting around on them when you spray but no actual humidity from adequate evaporation, leading to less pinning since evaporation from the substrate is the number one cause of pinning.
 
Also remember when misting and fanning; do it in that order.

Give some good mist shots above the tub and let it fall in - after which you will fan for at least 60 seconds.

Whenever I have lower humidity, and am inclined to mist a lot in a given setting, I will definitely make sure to stand there and fan-dry the tops of the caps that I already have. This standing water will rot them very quickly. (sounds like what happened to yours)

One main pinning factor is evaporation of water off the substrate. Sometimes I'll fan for 3 whole minutes after a heavy misting, doing some instant evaporation right there.

So side question, postponing flushes. I have one flush now almost finished on a grow which I will likely be picking over the next few days.

I will be away next week for a week. Can I leave the cakes for a week, come back, dunk, and then will the cakes still fruit? Or will a week unattended be too long to salvage?
