..this thread's for people to post Historic tracks that really innovated, established or began an archetype or genre of Trance (or Techno), which may since have become formularic or ubiquitous.


it's for the old-timers, the new-comers, the curious, musicologists, and dancers

and it's often refreshing to hear something that is completely originally inspired in the time..

right..i'll kick of with 'Trance' (an often abused term) and of course very mainstream these days
(without following any exact historical order)


a track which pretty much established a sound of Trance, particularly 'Goa Trance' is
the KLF's 'What Time Is Love?' (1988)

'Goa Trance' (and 'Forest Trance') lead to 'Psy-Trance',
of which one of the earliest archetypes would be
'Perception of Reality' by Psychaos (1994), a talented UK Sikh..

..all of this of course came from Acid House (which came from House and Techno)

of which one of the first cases was Phuture (from Chicago) ..here's 'Phuture Jack' (1987)

and if any track really took the concept of 'Acid House' to the next degree, and spawned the fields of TB303 craze of the late 80s/early 90s, it was

I'm lucky in that the city I live in has the longest running weekly psytrance events of any city in the world(apparently). It's been 10 years now without even going a week without a psy or goa party, all thanks to the efforts of a core group of older dj's(some from goa) and trance lovers.

Electronic bass music dominates the scene here, as it does the entire west coast of North America. I love bass and goa/psy both, but I spend much more time in the bass crowd..everything from heavy dubstep to ambient downtempo psy dub or temple step, glitch hop and I can stand some trap..sometimes... It's a huge part of my life.

The big festivals are mostly bass around these parts, with smaller 4-500 person psy and goa trance parties happening a couple times a year up in the mountains outside the city. My first real multi day rave was a psytrance festival years ago. It was only after that introduction that I got into bass music at a later date.

We know our roots, however.

What I really love is getting to meet the 40 something year old people, or older I encounter at festivals who really remember the early 90's etc. I remember looking in on the whole scene from the outside. I was too young to experience the rave culture of the early to mid 90's.

I have seen Simon DJ a number of times, but never a hallucinogen set...and I missed his younger brother set at shamb.

I did however catch a great merkaba set

Id kill for a good aphex twin set.

and how far we have come?..

People either love the guy or hate the guy. I love it..it's not trance but it's the most energetic and raw experiences I have had in the realm of electronic music. You just gotta be there in person..

I've seen Simon DJ a Shpongle set, which was great, but the full band takes it to a whole other level...

you know, i think when we have deep stored memories , of key moments in the cosmic cycles , that are associated with a particular piece of music, then they function like time capsules in a way…like strings to points…backwards in time, and from then to now…keys...also, with many ‘historical’ tracks, they are a quantum jump spontaneous intuitive archetype of a meme of sorts, so they are immediately and enthusiastically imitated, and built on or given analogues of, till we reach copies of copies…some kind of code evolution

..Irresistible Force (and era) reminds me of an all time early goan trance anthem, which was directly influenced by smoking dmt..

yes ommani, Simon Posford has sculpted a true musical career and path from the days of goa trance and butterfly studios..his favourite band before beginning to make trance was Ozric Tentacles

I was researching the origins of Goa/Psy-Trance just 2 month ago (I am in the scene since 1998,the year Goa turned to Psytrance...(there also was a lot of Goa at the partys).
