Sounds like you did it right, but just weren't ready for such face melting intensity
20mg, for me using the GVG, in one hit in and held for 20 secs is breakthrough territory, or near as dammit. The same dose over say, 3 tokes won't be nearly as intense or vivid. I would have to smoke closer to 30-35 in a bong for the same ride. In short, GVG ime is - in the words of Corpus Callosum "brutally efficient", which means you need to learn how to get there without ripping your face clean off :shock:
Sooo. My advice is: Harmalas! Yes! These are a fantastic tool and can help ease you in. What I and many other members tend to do is dose some harmalas 5-10 minutes before smoking. This 'primes' your nervous system. Then smoke a 'handshake dose' of, say, 10-15mg. This will provide a small trip, but most importantly get you in the zone. It will help quieten the mind and gets me in the mood for a larger dose. It also gives you a chance to pull out. If it's quite dark and unnerving, maybe it's best to lay down the pipe for another time, or if the vibees are good and you want to continue you can then smoke another 20mg, which will layer up with the DMT already in your system due to the harmalas, and the transition shouldn't be such a 'sledgehammer'.
At some point, if aiming for a breakthrough, you are going to have to deal with your terrified little ego screaming "Oh no! I've broken the Universe, I shouldn't be doing thiiiis!!!" Once you learn to control that, things get much easier. Of course rough rides will happen, but if you can maintain a calm, centered headspace you will manage it much, much better. Meditation is fantastic for this.
