Plants 'can recognise themselves'

Sorry if this has been discussed before. This is a BBC story from June 09, but interesting in light of the many recent threads debating materialist vs spiritual views of reality. Some cuttings of plants can recognize kin - other clones from the same mother.

The jury is still out in my own mind. I sometimes think consciousness is emergent - other times I believe it's "out there" everywhere.

This is indeed very interesting stuff. One plant warning another of an iminent attack causing it to release more chemicals. I wonder if this could be applied to some of the other spieces that we all know and love. Perhaps sacrificing an old plant thats going to die anyway would let it send a signal to its younger sibling telling it to potinate its self.. hmm. I hope they do more research on this one.
