plastic contaminate?

Hi!

if a pixie i know happened to mix his lye solution in a plastic measuring jug, and as he was adding the lye to the bark mix noticed that the lye mix had eaten some of the plastic away from the measuring jug and more than likely transfered the bits of plastic to the bark mix, is it ruined or will the plastic not transfer out during the pulls making it ok to continue?

I'll be doing all the pulls then doing a mini a/b

My opinion = Throw it away and dont play games with your health . You didnt say what kind of plastic it is or how old it is . Unless you get reliable infomation from a professional chemist you do not know if you could be doing yourself damage . I am not a chemist . I dont know BUT your life is worth to much to you ...... and me ....... to throw it away .

plastic, even hpde, will degrade over time, depending on several factors.

best to just use glass if at all possible.

There are ways to clean plasticizers (phthalates) from your product.
I personally agree with what GOD said 100% though.
Your health is the most important thing you have. Don't play with it.
I've got spice that i've meticulously washed with multiple solvents in glass containers i will never touch solely because i used a mason jar at the beginning & during an acetone wash seal on the inside of the jar started falling apart & getting soft.
I refuse to put any amount of whatever that rubbery plasticy stuff may be into my body & even after multiple washes unless you have access to analytical lab equipment you'll never know if it's 100% eliminated.

I'd advise you to invest the money & time in all glass containers, solvents & bases that come in glass or metal bottles with no rust inhibitors, etc.

Spice is something so valuable i feel one should take as much care in ensuring it is clean & devoid of any contaminants (aside from maybe some jungle alkaloid) as possible.

For dissolving lye pellets in water, preferably use a stainless steel container. Solid lye heats up when being dissolved and this sudden and localized heating may cause the glass to shatter.

Strange . From what i have read stainless steel doesnt like strong alkaline substances . They wash the chromium out wich is poisonous . OK IF done poperly the chromium wont go over into the benzine BUT the results of the experiment are only as good as the person who is doing it and his knowledge and correct chemistry procedurs . If we want to see that we just put a strong alkaline substance down a sink . It takes the chrome off the metal bit that the plug fits in .

We have to be carefull with glass and alkaline substances because after time the substance makes the glass brittle an it breaks very easily . For example ...... 15 liter carboy bottles are / were made and used for storing strong acids in ......... like hydrochloric and sulkphuric acid ........ BUT ....... strong alkaline substances make them brittle and they eventualy break . Maybe not with all sorts of glass . I dont know . BUT ....... do we know what sort of glass is maybe safe and what type isnt ? Can we tell them apart ?

Lab glass is ideal. Breakage is still poasible if care is not taken to avoid thermal shock.
Lab glass is not an option for everyone though. In that case glass jugs & carboys with an inert plug or lid are fine, just keep in mind the lye should be added slowly, heat cancelled out with a water bath during the process of adding the lye, & should not be re-used 1000x.
Breakage & weakening occur over time & short of sudden thermal shock or dropping, your glass will not suddenly just become so brittle it breaks.
New containers should be used every couple extractions in this case.

I'm not too worried about the amount of Cr ions ending up in the spice crystals. The amount of residual Cr is going to be several magnitudes less than the amount of residual NaOH and plant gunk.

You can mix your lye in a silver beaker if you insist*.

*) less fortunate or divine members may employ copper or cast iron vessels.
