Hi,

I recently started trying out recrystallization. Most guides I’ve found online describe using a solvent, heating it up, dissolving the DMT, and then siphoning what you want off the top.

What I’m confused about is what I should be leaving behind? I just recrystallized a small bit of DMT with Heptane, and everything dissolved but some orange goo. It the goal here to separate the orange from the rest of the solvent? I know there’s a lot here, and this is probably a dumb question but I’m not finding a clear cut answer on this - other than orange goo is okay.

the dmt will be in the heptane... so you decant the heptane into a new container to freeze and keep the orange goo behind.

The freeze precipitate from heptane will have your recrystallized dmt and the orange goo are either oils or other alkaloids. save the orange goo and try it separately.

The orange goo is (generally/usually/often?) polymerised DMT, which can be broken up into DMT again with a little acid/base treatment and pulling into a little more heptane. But it may also contain NMT, as well as other alkaloids, as @modern suggests. This depends to a fair extent on the exact plant source you've used.
