Quick question for anyone though, in the very beginning of the documentary as well as a banner below the film it says that "Over 25% of all modern pharmaceuticals are derived from plants in the Amazon rainforest". I've been doing some Googling to source this claim as it feels a bit off to me. I haven't been able to find any research about it but the same claim is made on various websites all over the internet.

Does anyone know where that number comes from? It would be remarkable if true...

It is interesting to me that if true, not only are we systematically destroying the lungs of our planet, but our planet's medicine cabinet as well...

an interesting conclusion one could draw from this findings is that western medicine isn't ineterested in healing mankind but in treating them.


And I don't blame the doctors as they get tought how to treat diseases as a huge part of their academic training. You can elaborate on this on TED Talks "what doctors worrie about"

So... having watched it now, I must say it was rather interesting.

The success stories are very remarkable, and the sad stuff was heartbreaking.

All in all a very cinematic glimpse into this peculiar world of Amazonian shamanism. It is interesting to see how much the western tourists have influenced everything. Obviously, Ramon and the filmmaker are westerners, and the visiting shaman, while being a local, is certainly not indigenous.

I have no qualms with any of that. Syncretic practices can be rather wonderful. Hearing them chanting Om Mane Padme Hum in an indigenous ceremony was fine by me. I am sure purists can find more traditional shaman still if they look hard.

For me, the proof is in the pudding. A couple seemingly miraculous cures, a number of dramatic improvements. Even the people who were not blessed with massive healing seem to have really appreciated the experience and grown from it. In a rather sad twist of fate, the guy who died seemed to be the one who liked the treatment the most.

Well, most of us here know full well the power of aya and san pedro. I am rather curious, though, about many of the plant healers they used for specific treatments. It seems that many people suffering from diabetes, IBS... and even parkinsons should really be figuring out how we can grow these miracle plants back home. I am a big supporter of the whole wildcrafting thing going on down there, and like to support the indigenous people by purchasing from them... and I think this kind of thing is a big impetus towards giving the people of the Amazon region a good reason not to cut down the forest... but realistically, given the number of people suffering from these conditions, the only long term solution is to get the greenhouses going and spread these plants far and wide.

It seems that many people suffering from diabetes, IBS... and even parkinsons should really be figuring out how we can grow these miracle plants back home. I am a big supporter of the whole wildcrafting thing going on down there and like to support the indigenous people by purchasing from them... and I think this kind of thing is a big impetus towards giving the people of the Amazon region a good reason not to cut down the forest... but realistically, given the number of people suffering from these conditions, the only long term solution is to get the greenhouses going and spread these plants far and wide.

I completely agree, but i would like to add that it is also the mental state of the patients they get into that makes the difference. Of course the plants to their job, but the fact that they sit there in the jungle with no worries or stress, to me seems another side of the healing. The stress and hurry in our societey is a killer in my opinion and pretty hard to stop as well.

Truth.

I don't think that making a jungle tea in your stressed out city life is any kind of substitute for that face yourself, mostly alone in a hut thing... the totality of that experience is rather powerful.

But with some of those teas, it was obvious that the physiological effect was pronounced, relatively speedy, and effective. For those who can't or won't go down there to spend a month or more tripping and detoxing from society... being able to drink a tea that

is certainly better than nothing.

Interesting Idea, HF. This could be a solution for protecting this sacred environment. But it makes me wonder if this wouldn't just end up in a new industrie or make researchers dig and maybe monopolize these substances in the rainforests plants. It would be just like medicine always was, treating the symptoms and not looking for the causes which may well be related to missing "spirituality" in so many ways..

I think that while the focus on new medicine from the amazon is great..the temperate rainforest of the world(esp the old growth rainforest of the PNW, dubbed the "Amazonia of temperate forests) has been largely ignored and unexplored. We should all be learning as much as we can about the local plants native to our own bioregions and bring back the folk traditions to our people, tailored to the lands we inhabit. I think the land itself will teach us..and in many ways the land is the only teacher left.

Also, I tried to watch that video and it only let me watch like 1/3 of it or soo..it cut out right after the first ayahuasca part and wanted me to buy the movie or something..is it like that for you guys?
