I was not upset and there are good clones and forms of peruvianus out there... including some I chose to discard.
I've been moving away from cacti and so have been shrinking my obnoxiously populated collection down drastically. I've been leaving stronger, hardier, stress tolerant, fast growing plants and discarding everything else.
in direct comparison to good pachanoi, peruvian torch:
* tends to grow more slowly and product less mass per year
* tends to be considerably less potent in terms of use and recovery
* tends to be less hardy, being more prone to sunburn and rot
* tends to be more difficult to manage and take cuttings of (serious spines can cause serious injury)
* tends to be less pure in terms of recovery, often having mixed alkaloids and a major alkaloid that is not mescaline
In one case there was a peruvianoid/macrogonoid clone going around with an alpha-numeric designation. It was noted to be several times more potent than some widely distributed weak pachanoi, it was thought to be fairly pure by users due to how it felt, analysis (unpublished) however showed that it contained mescaline and an isoquinoline alkaloid. The actual amount of mescaline was much less than was assumed to be there by users! Simply stated accounts of use cannot be considered evidence of purity and the recovery data for peruvianus that are considered strong (via first hand accounts of ingestion) are not impressive.
In terms of peruvianus though, some grow so slow that a fast growing weak clone of pachanoi is more desirable simply because of volume. Some plants grow 2-3 feet a year easily, but this is rare for a peruvianus (not unheard of though))
if you grow for decorative value alone or are a vendor then i could see peruvianus being worth having, they are pretty and they are hyped up quite a bit online.
Tips for new growers? Established plants can take a lot more sun, water and food than most people are aware of. Do not treat these plants like other cacti, grow them more like leafy plants. In winter, when it is cold, they often get more than a meter of rain! Throw out a lot of the assumptions about how to grow them and experiment. The potential of these plants is largely unrealized because of assumptions and misconceptions.
