scary numb mouth

Rising Star
Apologies if this is the wrong spot for this, just came here to get advice.

An extraction was recently done- first in a long while, but not the first.

Timeline went like this- did naptha pulls with decent yields, tested a small amount of the cleanest product (very near white) with zero issues, very smooth experience. This product was recrystalized to a beautiful white.

Did two warm xylene pulls and evap. The xylene was pulled very carefully resulting in essentially zero red basified water, a few specks maybe. In the past this has resulted in a solid red wax that wasn't unpleasant to vaporize, but this time the end product was a dark red, thick syrup. No cleaning process was done, but the syrup was heated in a hot water bath at 175f and stirred, and left in a turned off oven at 175f for about half an hour to help evap any possible remaining solvents. Only smell was that off NN, and it simply would not reduce further. There are reports of red goo, so it wasn't too concerning.

Product was tested in a small amount without big expectations. Placed in a large retort and vaporized with a torch, exact same process used for NN. Only this vapor actually felt like syrup condensing on the mouth and lips. Everywhere the vapor touched felt coated in a thin layer of syrup. This almost immediately turned into a pretty powerful numbing sensation on the tongue, and the point where the vapor first hit the upper lip actually felt like a blister was forming, which was pretty concerning. Numbness lasted about 15-20min, and there turned out to be no lasting damage. If anything, a very slight sore throat.

Effects were similar to around 20-25mg NN but lasted longer, 5/10 visually, extremely beautiful. But the mouth sensation was unlike anything experienced in the past and so intense it became difficult to enjoy the experience.

Is it possible this is a purity issue and that cleaning will solve the problem? Could it be a reaction to the product itself? Doesn't seem like a heat thing because all numbness did wear off, although it was a similar feeling. There are some lingering concerns about what may or may not have entered the lungs, however. Any advice is appreciated.

Dmt freebase itself would produce stinging/numbing effect if placed in the mouth, but it doesn't usually condense and coat the mouth as you describe, it maybe there is some contaminant making it behave like that. Try doing a water wash or if the amount you're dealing with is significant do a mini A/B.

Interesting. I guess I've never really made direct contact with it to be able to compare. I've definitely never experienced the way the vapor felt though. Condensing into a thin syrup-like liquid coating is the only way I know how to describe it. It's less concerning a couple of hours later since there are no lingering effects, but my brain was racing at the time. I will attempt a water wash and report back. Thanks!

I've gotten the numbing effect before on my tongue and lips. I'm picky about quality so I never have tried anything orange or red, but I guess looking back some of the worst numbing was when I was using a golden goo. Potent stuff, but yea I don't think I re-x'd it either. At the time I was thinking the vape I was using wasn't strong enough, and I interpreted the numbing as the vapor re-condensing in my mouth. I also suspected trace solvent. I think it happened with powder a couple times too and I suspected maybe it pulled through when inhaling.

I've read goo can turn into crystals after a mini-a/b, specifically the FASA process. I'd go that route or smear any goos thin until they eventually do dry out. I believe solvent can get trapped in crystals, and I'd think especially in goo.

sounds like some unvaped dmt is getting pulled into the mouth...?

its happened to me in the past...use a bubbler....water trap].... to stop problem..

I had this numbing effect several time on ayahuasca. At first I thought that the shaman that prepared it added toe (datura), which I read would cause this effect but when asked he answered that he didn’t add toe to the mixture…
My changa does exactly the same, this numbing sensation each time I smoke, so I’m thinking this is something really related to DMT and not to the extraction process itself …
Though, if someone has a better explanation, I’m open to it!
