But I would also say that for me I seek to dishabituate. Here is an analogy of what I mean: frogs' visual systems only see movement. Their eyes do not exhibit microsaccades so that their retinal cells quickly habituate to what they see. It is only when something moves, resulting in changes on their retina, that they actually see. (And, as an aside (as someone who works in this field), I simply have to say that there are serious problems with the 'grandmother cell theory,' one being that there is simply no good way to measure the specificity of the firing rate of one single neuron; another being that all a neuron 'does' is increase or decrease its relative firing rate).
