Sodium Hydroxide Powder vs. Liquid?

Hi, I'm in the Basifying stage of a Cybs' Hybrid ATB 'Salt' Tek.
The product I'm using is HG 1L liquid Drain Cleaner.

CONTAINS1.2 g/ml s.g.
Approximately 14.0 pH
level Compositions approximately 20%
sodium hydroxide Approximately 26% active matter.

The Tek says to weigh out 50g of Sodium Hydroxide but mine is in liquid form already, is it equivalent to powder?
Do I only need to measure out 50ml?

If your sodium hydroxide solution is 26 wt% (as I understand from the label), then 50 g of NaOH is equivalent to 50 / 26% = 50 / 0.26 = 192.3 mL

Note that remaining 74% of your solution is water, so you will also dilute your soup and you may want to use less water in the beginning to accomodate for that.

I usually make 50% NaOH solution (by dissolving 500 g NaOH in a ~650 mL water, then topping the water to 1 L). Then when I need to add, say, 31 grams of NaOH, I simply pour in 62 mL of solution (62 mL of 50% solution contains 62 * 50% = 62 * 0.5 = 31 g).

Dry NaOH pellets are safer but dissolving it is exothermic. Solution is more convenient but it comes with the water.

First let me point out that the picutre you provided is useless because on my device i cant see nothing from site and when downloaded (too small, blurred), i googled your drain cleaner MSDS and few popped up so im not sure which one you got exactly but one of the MSDS says it contains sodium laureth sulfate, i dont know if that can screw up your extraction wait for other members to reply, however i dont recommend you use liquid drain cleaners, because most of the time they contain other things in them that are not mentioned like perfumes, colorants etc. Im 100% sure that you can find Sodium Hydroxide pellets/chunks (lye) in your town, no way you cant.. did you check in hardware store?

To answear your question: If you decide to use your drain cleaner just add little by little, swirl/mix contents (for accurate pH measurment) check pH and continue adding drain cleaner untill you reach desired pH, if you dont have pH meter/test kit just add your drain cleaner untill the color changes to grey then to black then add a little more to be sure and your good. :thumb_up:

Here is a better picture. I used 100 ml of it instead of 50ml last night. I never added any Naphtha yet. Been holding back on the pulling step.

If it has only NaOH without any color/smell just water/naoh its ok to use, its even easier.
Its fine that you used 100ml instead of 50ml, if desired pH is reached you can continue with your extraction. Good Luck, at the end you can share results here if you want! :thumb_up:

Well, it didn't work. After adding the 50ml of NPS and many mix and wait attemps, over a 4 hour period. I got very little separation. I added another 150ml of Sodium Hydroxide, 25ml of NPS and a little more non iodized salt and still, hardly no separation. Now my 1 litre mason jar is full.

HG liquid drain came from Home Hardware, it is clear like water. Labeled Acid free, no-heat formula, biodegradable.

Do I disgard it and start from scratch, with a powder form of Sodium Hydroxide?

Next time use NaOH pellets/chunks yes!
But dont throw nothing away its not lost. So from my understanding you now have bark/water/drain cleaner mix with saline solution and NPS that wont separate? And you added more NaOH to see if it separates?

transfer in bigger container, heat water bath, a little NaCL saturated solution, or maybe even add more plain water.. please before you start doing anything again just read more man, no offense but you clearly didnt do your homework. Dont waste plant material that had to grow years before being killed to be screwed up by someone who didnt even bother to read for few hours. :? I mean you dont even have to make the procedure yourself you have it written and you dont even bother to read. Plan your extraction! :|

Edit: Is there anyway that the "little separation" you say could be the actuall separation of the NPS but you just think its little? (75ml is not much and it wont look like much especially in wide container)

I only messed up on buying liquid NaOH and not powder, I followed that tek in order. There was nothing else, no pellets. I'm at a Canadian tire store looking now. I read, but can't always get exactly whats needed
