Hey there,

I don't think this is the right place to post this but I do not have access to post in most of the other forums yet! Not exactly sure how I can start posting in the other forums :?

I am struggling to find Naptha, but Shellite is everywhere. Is this the same thing?

If someone was to use this tek and swap the Naptha for Shellite, would it work just fine? Phyllodes from A.Floribunda, A. Acuminata and potentially some A.Longolia bark will be used. If you think this tek is not suitable and there is a better, easier one to try then please let me know!

Thanks in advance 8)

Shellite is a naphtha.

wikipedia said:
Naphtha (/ˈnæfθə/ or /ˈnæpθə/) is an extremely general term that has been in use for over two thousand years to refer to flammable liquid hydrocarbon mixtures. Mixtures labelled naphtha have been produced from natural gas condensates, the petroleum distillates, and the distillation of coal tar and peat. It is used differently in different industries and regions to refer to gross products like crude oil or refined products such as kerosene

Shellite , from my basic understanding is a brand name , from the "Shell" oil company , Marketed in Australian and New zealand ... This company recently re-branded into the " Z" petrol stations here in NZ .. and Shellite is nothing more than a particular brand of Naptha.

Shellite - Wikipedia

having said this , nearly every company that makes Naptha , makes a slightly different mix of the component hydro carbons ... .. think of it as going to a few different bars around the world and asking for a " screwdriver " ... Someplace you get 50/50 Gin and Juice... other places more or less juice to gin .. other places might make it with vodka .. some will use fresh squeezed OJ , others might use frozen , or even powdered .stuff .. and the amount of ice can vary even at the same bar or the same bartender on different days ...

so if a bottle says " white sprits " , "Naptha" , Shellite , or a few different things ...

you will essentailly be getting various mixtures of hydrocarbons that will make up your naptha ...
this one for example ...
http://www.recochem.com.au/files/downloads/Shellite.pdf

"INGREDIENTS
Chemical Entity
CAS Number
Proportion (%)
Naphtha (petroleum), hydrotreated light

Containing
n-Hexane 10-30%

Ethylbenzene
<10
Product contains < 0.1% benzene "

so even looking at the saftey sheet at most we can account for about half the voloume of the end product .. meaning this brand of Shellite is made out of 100% "naptha" , and the naptha is made from 30% Hexane , 10% Ethylbenzene , and just a drop of Benzene , plus the remainder is not even listed ...

where as we have this popular brand of lighter fluid here
http://secure.cooperbooth.com/datasheets/160606.pdf

All we can tell from this is that the lighter fliud is made up of 95% light naptha with 5% medium naptha .. as you can see by reading the sheet is basicly says that either of these "napthas" can be made up of any sorta mixture of hydrcarbons ...

Best bet when trying to find a good solvent is to choose the clearest stuff you can , dry a drop or two onto clear glass and let it dry ... Observe with black paper underneath and then again with white apear underneath ... you should see ZERO residue of any kind ... if you get the slightest white , rainbow , or any sort of color what so ever try a different brand ... you dont want any unknown anything in your lungs at the end of the day
