Botany The Acacia Grow Thread

Growing logs with advice and results.
Migrated topic.
The rootball was pretty solid, not severely root bound but probably close to it. It'd been in the same pot for about 9 months, not the longest time. They're in a really nice spot, nestled amongst other older acacia, nice light and accessible.

No worries about the photos. All in good time. I often resize my photos so they upload faster.

If its really solid it can help shaving off the edges a little as if you're cutting the skin off a pineapple. But wattle is one I wouldn't do that with.

Hey there 👋🏼🤗

Passing by to show my Acacias Confusa. Planted them seeds somewhere 3 months ago. They have cold weather and winter ahead of them. ( 0 C -10 C, Mediterranean winter)

If everything goes well, and after transplanting, I'll plant them somewhere outside, in a nice place. Just wanted to thank the nature.

Be well everyone

Kind regards

@acacian just wondering, when you collect phyllodes do you only pick up ones that have dropped off the tree or do you cut off some older small branches/twigs?
great looking trees by the way! You are the acacia master.

@Servant yeah your confusas are looking great! Your using a mix of coir, perlite and.. what else?
@Bruce_Willis for my own trees I will keep as much fallen material as I can.. I will wait until they're a bit older to start taking any material from them. But they do react well to pruning. It helps them bush out a lot. If using a species with decent % in phyllodes its worth pruning them each year to encourage them to grow more phyllodes.

If I am collecting from trees elsewhere I'll usually do the same and prune. Sometimes it will be pretty easy to find a branch thats snapped off in a storm and is still fresh. For more leathery leaves fallen is good but for softer leaves they tend to rot much quicker. A species like phlebophylla fallen phyllodes are very effective.

Do variegated acacia exist? These are acuminata just over 3 months from seed in a semi-hydro setup

That's normal at the seedling stage .. usually indicates bad seed. Most yellow seedlings I get are runts that never come good. But it looks like the phyllode is ok so might be fine.

@modern the medium you have them growing in looks a bit problematic and is likely causing the yellowing (not variegation). The mix needs to be free draining and positioned with plenty of sunlight and airflow. There's a few aphids hanging out too.

@acacian plants look great man! The prune on the White Willow wasn't as bad as I thought, still has plenty of foliage, which is good to see. Is it wool around the base of the Phleb? Good idea!

@CheeseCat I think considering the very first pinnae came out yellow its likely a dud seed. I get some seedlings coming up like that from wild seed I've collected. Some just have crappy genetics and or lack the nutrients to support the seedling.. probably due to not completing it's growth before the pods ripen and dry out. But yeah it definitely looks like there's some bacterial infection on the surface so very likely also could be that. What's your medium?

Yes the prune has come good.. it looked bloody awful at first so glad spring has brought plenty of foliage back. Summer is here now though so that might slow down.. I hope it stays mild for at least another couple weeks but I think soon the new growth will get scorched. The sun is really strong up here. Stoked on how your plants are looking!

Below is white willow after very aggressive pruning..

Woah, it did get a solid chop! A lot of trees love a good prune it seems. Yeah, the sun over here is pretty savage too. Fingers crossed the new growth handles it. I plan to give my obtusifolia a good prune post flowering.

Everything is bursting with growth lately. It's incredible what can happen in just two months. Small seed is tucked in the top right corner and oxycedrus is just below (slightly out of frame). White willows at the front.
