The [redundant] use of SWIM

Migrated topic.

Rising Star
I am sure there has been a thread on this in the past. However, I'd like to raise it again if only to rant and vent.

SWIM! Is useless and redundant. Do you really think that if someone were to actually come knocking on your door, the fact that you have used SWIM instead of 'me' or 'I' on an interwebs forum, that it is going to make them go away?

If you must use SWIM you will find that once you have used it, from that point on you are allowed, by the grammatical rules of English to refer to that SWIM as he, she or it. This would be easier on the eye to read. You can also alter your writing style to include a minimal number of references to SWIM. I don't have a problem with this at all.

When I read a post and all that jumps out is SWIM, I see this

SWIMBlah blah SWIM Blah blah blah SWIM. SWIM blah SWIM blah Blah blah SWIM blah SWIM. Blah blah SWIM Blah blah SWIM Blah blah SWIM Blah blah SWIM.
SWIM Blah blah SWIM. SWIM Blah blah SWIM Blah blah Blah blah SWIM. SWIM SWIM SWIM SWIM.

Which would be a shame. Better to try and point people in a direction that their voice may be heard as opposed to ignored, or not?

Going off and starting a thread that they can't respond to that mocks their posting style is hardly that. I contend it's better to look the other way and give them time and space to grow. In any case, your response to the thread could have been a bit more helpful by being a bit less biased in the matter.

For instance, an example of how he could have posted that would make it easier to read would go something like this:
SWIM did it. Oh my God he did it for the first time and couldn't believe it.

You're right. SWIM has been a prick about it and apologises.

Here is a good example.

if people want their posts read, then make them readable. I supposed asking people to use paragraphs would be considered badgering too?

And that merits a whole new thread that retreads this old worn-out path? Try not responding to such posts, perhaps. No offense to the OP of that thread, but most would likely never bother with such a post.

Even using I and Me on a forum is not a confession, because you could say that you lie about what you do to fit in and make friends. You would have to confess to a court room or person in law, like a police officer.

I'm pretty sure that if you gave someone a motrin and told them it was E, you could still wind up with drug charges. It matters very much what you say and write.

What´s the ,OP´?

This has been spoken about many a times, there are many different views. this thread has loads of talk about this.

I think that maybe some new members are a bit hasty, and have not read through some sticky threads. heck some dont even read the attitude page. This forum is quit welcoming and a nice place to talk about the journey that we all go through, and when youve just experienced it, you want to get it out there.

SWIM doesnt really bug me, nor does SWIY and the rest of their family.

Posting etiquette we can all learn along the way:)

I am just waiting for some newbie user to come along and call himself SWIM :d

The law will come down on that poor bastitch like a Steinway and Sons hitting a Baked Alaska.
  Hahahaha! Now that's some funny shizit!

I'm torn on the whole SWIM thing. SWIM ( :p ) NEVER used to use it, but now that things are getting more in the public eye, he's been using it more.

I seriously doubt that this would hold up as any kind of legal defense however.

Peace!

It's just a way some people on forums like this talk and I think it's.... well nothing. I don't care. It's just a way people talk nothing more. So why get bothered over it. I have other things to do with my life than to be bothered if people here write SWIM or I.

It may have been SWIM or Elvis Presley's Evil Clone, or even the Eternal Living Spirit of Mother Theresa's Mother who extracts spice from MHRB or suchlike. But that was definitely me that was sucked into a hyperdimensional light cathedral made of void and love and infinitely fractalising quantum jimjam.

This is what the Matrix looks like after you smoke DMT

I agree redundant, because it makes me think twice when I type, whether or not I am who I thought I was.

I don't do illegal activities, but many SWIMs out there might. Some of the SWIMs I talk about are currently in jail serving time for their illegal activities. But most SWIMs I talk about are either licensed to do their research or are doing so where such activity is legal.

The fact that the BBB owner Sloan is facing serious prison time for selling mimosa, is I think a good reason to be more cautious on-line. SWIM also agrees with me on this one, and the older SWIM also agrees, but the SWIM in jail doesn’t and thinks you should be bold about your illegal activities (look where it got him).

For those who are too bold, just think of Sloan, one of the SWIMs out there. He’s facing something like 75 years in prison for selling mimosa on-line, he was not even selling DMT, just plant root bark. He didn’t even extract DMT and is still facing charges.

All of you DEA and FDA officials out there promoting the non-use of terms like SWIM, and promoting self-incrimination should be ashamed of yourselves.

To the rest of the community who self-incriminates, I ask you WHY DO IT? Just to make your text more readable? That’s ridiculous. You might as well hold up a flag that says, “DEA. Come Get Me”, put your address on Google, and welcome them to your front door. Honestly, that makes no sense to me.

Thanks for the laugh Ghostman. 'SWIM' is definitely an abused idiosyncrasy of this forum, and I can easily imagine Bill Hicks or some other stand up comic making fun of it.

No doubt it is a necessary precaution, and one eventually learns to ignore it, but it is the lack of originality that becomes so tiresome. It isn't that great a shift to change from first person to third. Sometimes someone comes up with a surprising twist on the SWIM formula.

People who delight in SWIM and who will be puzzled by your irritation, are the kind of people who love to wear their favourite rock band on their T-Shirts, parade around their national flag, or get violent over sport. They need to feel a part of clique, and you can almost sense their pleasure when it is finally their turn to use SWIM.

Wow..more negativity?

Why do you feel the need to steriotype people like that? Does it make you feel better?

All good points 69. My dilemma is that everything I posts here is fictional, creative writing, so using SWIM really shouldn't be required. The reason I've started using SWIM more frequently is just to clarify that my writing is referring to a character of my story, it's just one more level of separation. Sometimes I use "I" in my writing as well to make a story more readable, and to mix things up a little. First person fictional writing can be fun as well.

Sloan was REALLY selling stuff allegedly (although not technically illegal), but there was real physical product involved from what I've read. This is something that I personally am not doing, so there are really two separate facets to this discussion.

But yeah, I agree that there is no sense in falsely incriminating one's self and pointlessly consuming the time of both law enforcement and one's self.

SWIM also makes creative writing easier, because it's a catch-all term for any character that one is writing about. It saves time in creating and defining characters. Grammatically it's not the most appropriate practice, but it works on a forum like this where everyone understands it's purpose.

It is really, really fun having an us and them duality, and then hating the 'them' and loving the 'us'. I know I'm a hypocrite. I'm just having fun, and so are you if you're offended by me. I just happen to be your 'them'.

hah well ok..whats so fun about it though?..in the end it just leads to another level of seperation..your comment just seemed a bit out of place and kind of rude..

"They need to feel a part of clique, and you can almost sense their pleasure when it is finally their turn to use SWIM."

I mean..doesnt that sound sort of almost mean??..not to mention assuming of others here..i doubt people use the term swim to part of a clique or that they get pleasure when they can finally use the term..haha i mean reading that in the state im in right now just made me sort of shake my head in confustion as to how you came to that..

Maybe they just know someone who smoked DMT and asked them to write about it.

Morphane,

It's not so surprising that you wouldn't feel the need to take precautions - because in what way have you ever incriminated yourself inside this forum? You've never had the experience and make it clear that you never will. You come here only to bait and debate, to question the epiphanies of others, and you endlessly play the devil's advocate while knowing fuckall what you're talking about.

You hold yourself and your particular faith as morally and spiritually superior, but I would like to cordially invite you - officially here and now - to JUST ONE TIME experience FOR YOURSELF what we as a community gather here to authentically try and make sense of.

Or, you could simply shut the fuck up and go about your way. Your shtick is sad and woefully tiresome. You must have better shit to do.

Morphane gets grumpy when he's late for his self flagellation. Also when he realizes that he took a solemn vow of silence on our forum, but can't help being a virtual asshole, and therefore must break said vow.

Don't you have somewhere else to be Morphane?

Pokey the Heretic:shock:

Ron, I live in a teeny Alpine country, eat chocolate croissants for breakfast, speak 5 languages and pee sitting down. I think DEA or FDA official is an exaggerated accusation.

I don't think you read my initial post properly.

I am not asking you to come out of your collective hyperspacial closets, don rainbow coloured spandex jump suits, parade around and proclaim that you smoke DMT.

Is what I said.

If 50% of someone's post is SWIM, then it makes it unreadable. If someone has just had strips torn off him because he smoked DMT and needs to get it off his chest, then put some effort into the way you write it so that others may read it and respond appropriately. This community prides itself on the quality of the community and the quality of its content.

Making your post readable does not equate to incrimination. That's all.

With regards to the self-incrimination, I think it's quite naive. Fair play, some of you are mature in your posting, others swim in and out of the SWIM pool. If the fuzz do come a-knocking and you tell them SWIMs not here, they will likely laugh at you. People post their glass-ware online and there is likely a myriad paraphernalia lying around peoples homes (not to mention Spice, scales, lab-ware, chems, bark etc). If you think your IP address can't be linked to your posts, to your credit card, to your online purchases of materials etc then think again.

Sloppy behavior and dodgy dealings get you busted, not better writing.

Now, SWIM apologised for having been a prick to the newbie, I even went back to the original thread and made amends, advising young Skywalker that unless he just wanted to be ignored, he should write better.

For a thread that is seemingly redundant, you are all making a big fuss over it. Close the thread or delete it, but for the love of God can we please have a group hug and move on. (insert group hug smiley here)

Peace people.

This thread is same old stuff just like the threads that discuss the term SWIM, yes again with the usual sauté of mild negativity. I will lock this one for the moment because there is no need for discussion to go in circles.

The bottom line is this and it will always be this:

Some people do not like to use the word SWIM. Some do. Some may be using the term because they do not want to incriminate themselves, while other people use the term because they actually talk about the activities of Someone Who Isn't Me/You/He. It is all a matter of preference, convenience and style, it insults no one and it is thus respected here on the Nexus. It is as simple as that!

Ghostman was making a point about overusing the term after every second word, not about whether the term is good or bad.

Hey gang - This is an interesting thread, but it's getting quite long, and I'm wondering if it's a healthy and productive thread. In lieu of what's going on in the industry right now, I wonder if we shouldn't just leave it alone for a while. I'm not into thread policing at all, but the more I think about it, I wonder if this one might just be best left alone. Thoughts?

Peace,
