I recently came into possession of what I am pretty sure are p. cubensis mushrooms (sadly, I can't grow them myself right now). The girl told me they were "Gold Caps," and that they were super-potent (apparently someone at 2g, blacked out and was generally psychotic).

I know that mostly Gold Caps is just a way for unscrupulous dealers to drive up the price of otherwise ordinary cubes, but is it possible for a dose to vary that much?
My normal dose is 2gs, but they were telling me to start with .5-1.

I've never heard of such a variation among one species of mushrooms. Perhaps they're just really not used to tripping?

Cubes are cubes are cubes. Unless it's a Penis Envy strain all P. Cubensis will generally be the same potency. I've seen people (albeit inexperienced) lose their minds off an eighth whereas all the others that took the same dose of the same mushrooms had a pleasant trip. It's all about the person taking it. Honestly if it were me I'd take the same dose that I always do. 2g of any Cubensis won't send you over the edge if that's your usual dose and you're experienced/comfortable with the fungus.

afaik "gold cap" is just another name for your average cube.

It's possible they are the Penis Envy strain which are significantly stronger than most cubes and would adhere the closest to the dosing guidelines you outlined. That's the only cube strain I know of that has that different of a potency.

I disagree. I never had PenisEnvy but i experience strange variations with all cube strains.

When i was younger and less experienced with shrooms i would regularly take doses between 3-4 gram max to reach decent levels. Now 10 years later i can tap into deeper levels of intensity with less then half.
Half a gram of czech cubes kicked my ass, i had an extremly difficult trip on 1 gram of other cubes later with the most intense and colorful CEV i've ever seen (very close to Ayahuasca).

Whatever it is, body chemistry or my mind, i don't know, but the difference is there and it is intense. So be careful, better safe than sorry.

There are certainly variations in potency but that derives from genetics.

I'm not denying that perhaps Johnny Psychonaut has gotten a bigger experience out of 2g of GT than 2g of Red Boy, but once again... that's genetics - not race.
 
I have grown and eaten 10+ different strains and I thought there was certainly differences in the trips that each one provided. The differences are not as much about potency ....they have to do more with the individual "vibes" (for lack of a better word) of each strain.
Although I find there to be a very noticeable difference in the feeling of south american vs. Thai cubensis with vibes as well as potency.

I have also noticed that potency increases quite a bit whenever I have isolated any particular strain as opposed to growing straight from the spore prints without isolating anything.

In my opinion the whole "cube is a cube" thing just doesn't ring true in the least.

I believe that every mushroom strain holds it's own special "vibes" that are specific to what ever region the mushroom originated from.

Even with mimosa I noticed a difference in the feeling of Mexican vs Brazilian grown varieties. I think it is just the nature of plants and fungi to soak up the vibes of what ever region they are growing in.
 
I had a similar experience to the OP, I obtained some mushrooms and was told that there were a couple that were from a special stash and should only eat 2 caps max....I didn't believe them of course and ate 2 of the special caps and four regular cubes. On the come up I lost all sight and hearing for about 2-5 minutes, I tripped very hard and was extremely confused all night.

I still don't know what the special mushrooms were, they looked like immature cubes as they were tiny and still had intact veil although the caps were a purplish red color.

My advice, listen to their advice. You can always eat more.

Yeah, that's what mine look like as well: very small reddish brown heads. They do look immature.

I will proceed with caution.
 
I gotta third that. Bubes are not cubes for me. Maybe not potency as has been said but certainly in characteristics and messages. PF cubensis are the most visually lovely mushroom I have ever consumed and golden teachers never miss the mark for good vibes.

WAX- Other types of mushrooms that are psychoactive have some nasty side effects such as paralysis and impaired motor skills. Azuresence have scared the hell out of more than one person before.
Another thought could be aborts. Aborts can have really whacky differing effects for people as well as know to be strong as an SOB. What you're both describing could be aborts and since are known to pack a punch that could be why they came with a warning.
