Easiest way to tell if it is M. hostilis or not is that true hostilis has thorns and flowers white. There are many mimosa species that are nearly identical but flower pink or yellow. Some are active but less so than hostilis or not at all. MH has a hanging white elongated flower not just a single puff ball but a stem of many small puffs if you will. Hope that helps...I believe you might have something more like a jacaranda tree there which I believe is a mimosa species too but not active.
