Trichloroethylene as solvent

Migrated topic.

Maybe is stupid opening a new topic just for this, but SWIM was thinking about using trichloroethylene to pull spice, since he can found very cheap in large quantities.

SWIM has done an extraction with it, an STB, but the MHRB was already exaust so SWIM doesn't know if it worked bad for that.

Thanks for eventually answering =)

Cheers

Just make sure you don't inhale any of the vapors from the solvent, and make sure absolutely every part of the solvent is gone before you ingest your spice. Also, never ever dump trichloroethylene in the nature, in your toilet, sink or anywhere else. This is a very toxic compound, actually I feel you shouldn't mess around with chlorine at all.

for all practical purposes, SWIM only uses methylene chloride. hexane to re-xtallize

Methylene chloride (AKA., dichloromethane, or DCM) is a fantastic solvent. Anyone who feels comfortable working with solvents that are a little toxic should have this one. It has so many benefits. It can extract more DMT, bufotenine, and mescaline than nearly all other solvents. It evaporates really fast, it's not flammable, it boils at a very low temperature, and it can be re-distilled over and over really fast without collecting too much junk because of the low boiling point. It's the chemist's dream solvent. Anyone who's not using it is really missing out.

SWIM has not tried trichloroethylene, but the higher boiling point makes it less useful in my opinion.

Uh, really?
so, athough is not an IPA, it can work for bufotenine. That's a great news, since I have to extract in this days. Do you think trichloro is as good as dichloro, for pulling (although it isn't so volatile)?

I think I can get some dichloroethylene, I'll give a look.

Thanks a lot guys =)

I love evapping DCM in luke warm water :) It's just a novelty for myself to see something boil at such a low temperature... from a distance and outdoors of course :)

Hi guys.
I've use TCE for a Spice extraction, now is in freeze precipitation, but looks like the crystals aren't coming down. I mean, I can see them, but they don't get to the bottom, just keep floating in the TCE.
That may be a problem for decanting.
Isn't it happening to you too?

I know but someone might be asking this in the future.

If TCE is similar to DCM (most probably is) you can't freeze precipitate DMT out of it. You need to evap the TCE/DCM.

Its safe to mix with naoh??
It's OK with dilute solutions, but you should avoid contact with the solid, and concentrated liquid forms especially in solvents other than water. Sounds like a fun experiment to try on a small scale though :D

Get hold of L. Bretherick's "Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards" for more fun ideas safety information.
