VG Pipe and crystals

Would it be a good idea to use a VaporGenie Classic Pipe with crystals?
Will the crystals melt over the gauze and dirty it?
SWIM just wants the pure experience without any other interference. Will adding herbs to absorb any melting crystals alter the experience?
