What am i doing wrong?

I noticed my peyote is getting this gray color at the side. I know I need to place it in a bigger container, but am waiting for spring for that. Do you know what is causing this, a few months ago it was as green as it could be.

Any suggestions?

closer /clearer pic would help but i'd guess MITE damage.
also the soils looks to have alot of organic matter. rec'd more mineral based soil.

Would it be ok to re-pot the cactus at this stage in the middle of the winter? I was planning on waiting until spring?

U should have dirt that was lots of rock hardly any organic matter. Now that dirt look very moist. And it. Should be bone dry around this time. I stop watering on October. If u have been watering since and ur temps have been low than ur cactus could have developed rot. Check if its squishy. And uproot it carefully and check the roots for rot. U could still save it. If there rot u might have to let it dry out of its pot. I sometimes cut were rot has developed and dust with sulphuric garden dust. In order to repot it rule of thumb anytime u up root U MUST LET THE ROOT DRY 4 A WEEK AT LEAST BEFORE REPOTTING SO that any slight damage may heal. Small damage may develop rot. And climb if ur mixture dont dry out. My question is why does ur dirt look wet. Its not a game. People tell u not to water for a reason.

id say insect damage for sure. looks like spidermite damage.

get a magnifying glass and inspect for tiny-tiny crawlers. spray with some type of alcohol.

yes its ok to re-pot. just use dry medium and dont water much if at all for several weeks afterwards.

I have been watering a bit lately, but only because it was in a room with high temperature. I have just moved it to a colder room today and won't be watering anymore for the rest of the winter. I am just not sure if it's ok to let it have sun or not? I don't think it's rot as it is not squishy.

I don't have a magnifying glass but do you have any examples on what kind of alcohol I can use?
I'll try to re-pot next weekend and check for the mites as soon as I get the magnifying glass.

Just wanted to ask what the best place is to place a cactus during the winter? Should it be left at the same window where there is sun? I now have them in a room where there is no heating on, but where during the day the sun shines most. It surely won't become colder than 10 degrees Celsius. The information seems to be a bit unclear about this.

Yes give it sun till the medium dries out. I keep my were it get mostly indirect light. Enough light to keep it warm during the day. It should be alright

So here's a little update.

I found some tiny red crawlers on my peyote. I think you were right. I went out and bought some insecticide against spider mites, repot the cactus and sprayed some of it on the plant and a little on the roots as well.

Hopefully it will recover quickly.
