Ok guys,

I have just come back from a mushroom hunt and I have never been so excited as I am now.
Please look at the pics and tell me what you think? Are these the real liberty caps?

Now, I have been doing my research, but since it's my first time finding them (hopefully) I just wanted your opinions.
I have cut a few caps to do some spore prints, will be checking in the morning for them.

The stem of the biggest one measures about 9cm, the smallest about 3cm.
The width of the cap is between 1cm and 2cm.

Also, could someone shed some light on how I should go about to dry them?

They look good to me:thumb_up:

To dry them I either sandwich them between 2 sheets of paper or put a fan on them
 
Newspaper or regular paper or does it not matter?
And just keep them at normal room temp?
 
I use regular paper at room temp.

a food dehydrator would be perfect but I don't have one.

How many of the little fellas did you find?
 
Just placed them in between two sheets of paper 😁

I picked about 30 of them, but there were still some left. As I wasn't completely sure I left some of them, also in the hope they'll be dropping their spores soon and I will be able to pick some more next year.

I'll be going back tomorrow, as I didn't even scan the whole area... :love:

Can't believe my luck, as I was actually heading home disappointed with my empty basket, when I was unleashing one of my dogs when I saw them there next to the path in the grass... I couldn't believe it. I was so excited. :) :)
 
Good stuff. My tip for picking is once you have found your first ones the crouch down and scan the area, I find it much easier to see them when your down at shrooms eye level.

Just be careful, those are some strong mushrooms.

I have checked the spore print this morning and it is purplish/brown :)

i am so jealous... i wish i could just find shrooms for free to eat. I LOVE EM!!!

You can, just do as I did, get yourself a good psilocybine mushroom guide like the one from Paul Stamets, look for the kind of mushroom that appears in your area and go hunting! :)
 
it's unfortunate they don't grow everywhere. Just one more reason to travel I suppose.

I believe Paul Stamets' book says they are the most widely distributed psilocybe species. They grow nearly everywhere, so you may not need to travel far!
 
Yes, according to his book, at least SOME type of psilocybe prolly grows in your neck of the woods. Research,mon frere, and ye shall (likely) find.😁
 
Nice find Elpo congrats. I have been on a few hunts this fall in grassland but have yet to find the little buggers. Can you describe the environment/terrain where you found them?

I went looking for them in tall grasslands where sheep and other cattle roam. I must say I didn't find them there, but some hundred meters away from that field. But still in tall wet grasslands very close to a small lake. I think the best method is looking for different spots that fit the description and go there regularly especially after rainy days. I assume these are the last weeks because in my region it is getting cold.

I also went back to the same spot to check if new ones had come out and they had. I decided to just leave them be to be as I had enough for a year. This way hopefully I'll be able to go back next year and find new ones.
