3rd possible fail at gibrans tek plz help

Migrated topic.
My friend is on his 3rd attempt at gibrans Caapi extraction. He completed the acid boil and when he added lye solution to a ph of 12.8 the solution is black, not cloudy. Is it possible the solution is not cooled enough? Would that make a difference? Should he add more lye? He really need some help with this. 3 trys with no progress is getting discouraging :(

You should always work with cool/room temp solutions. High temps solutions increase the solubility of bases in water, even warm afaik. Adding more will be no good since upon cooling you will have excess base crashing out, so waiting for it to cool would be a good first step. If nothing precips after cooling, then try to add more base.

Clouding is often not visible on the first basing stage, due to the darkness of the liquid. Wait for a few days and you should see some sediment (harmala freebase) settled out on the bottom. Can be hard to distinguish this dark brown (impure) freebase from the black liquid but you should be able to retrieve it by filtering or siphoning off most of the liquid above and then evaporating.

I have been having the same problem. I actually gave up after four attempts. I had nothing but success in the past. I used vine from different sources. Letting the base solution cool down suggestion is something, but I'm pretty sure I was doing that in the first place. I need to get back to successful vine extracts. I have plenty of rue extract, but I don't like rue.

poured a small portion of the solution into a different container and added MASSIVE amounts of lye and got this. the sediment is really dark and when i move the container it moves so it doesnt seem to be solid. this look right?

its gotta be the vine quality man. i just did the first base on rue and it went milky just like its supposed to.

ive read the gibrans thread all the way through 3 times. i saw once that if ur solution turns black that means no alks in it.

also read that vendors are selling angelica? as caapi. im guessing if this is the case that no alks would precip.

Hey there dnbjunkie! I know how you feel a bit. I did this tek about a year and half ago with what i was thinking at first was a failure. I couldnt see any clouding either. I dont recall how dark the liquid was. But i just ended up adding more lye and began to see the alks crash out.
