Introduction
The aim of this post is to help beginners to choose appropriately the equipment for DMT aerosolization with e-cig base and sub-ohm tank e-cig. The goal is to give insights and examples so that anyone can chose wisely the setup needed according to the market availability, the budget and convenience needs. Various setups can do the job with more or less reliability and efficiency, and also convenience. There is nothing such as a unique universal and suitable setup. It's all up to your preferences according to defined criteria. That's why I think it's important to take time to choose your setup in an informed way. The key for success is to find the good equilibrium between the setup, the settings and the d-juice ratio.
Devices examples will be given in this guide, in yellow my favored choice. Most of them are available on the early 2026 market, I'll try to keep an up to date list over time.
To aerosolize DMT with a sub-ohm e-cig, you'll need : a mod (+ 18650/21700 battery), a sub-ohm tank, sub-ohm coils, PG/VG base, and of course, DMT in freebase form.
The mod
The mod is the device containing the battery which delivers the power, the screen and buttons for settings and a 510 pin on which the tank is screwed. It's probably the most easiest part to choose in your setup. All you need is a single battery mod intended for sub-ohm tanks with a power/watts mode. The most commonly available on the market are able to provide 80-100 watts power, which is more than enough for this purpose.
Battery could be whether built-in or external. If external, you'll probably have to purchase the battery separately as it is rarely included in the package. The battery is usually a 18650 model but the biggest mods can use 21700 battery. A 21700 battery compatible mod will probably be bigger and heavier but with longer battery life and allows (in general) bigger tanks. The preference between portability and autonomy is up to you but you'll have to ensure the mod is large enough to accommodate the tank of your choice. 18650 battery mods will usually allow up to 24-25mm base diameter tanks whereas 21700 battery mods will allow for larger base tanks up to 26mm.
A few single battery suitable mods examples :
A pictured example to show single battery mods setups possible diversity

The tank (clearomiser)
The tank is the most important part for your setup efficiency and reliability. You'll have to chose it following those criteria :
Tank airflow
Your tank should have top airflow. Bottom airflow, when they leak, will make you lose your precious d-juice out of the tank. Top airflow tanks are less prone to leaks and when they leak they'll do it inside the bottom cap of the tank, which will allow you to retrieve most of the juice with a syringe or other method, rather than have it lost in your pocket or on your sofa blanket. It's an essential criteria. Not that bottom airflow would not work but it's up to you to decide if you prefer to irretrievably lose your juice rather than being able to retrieve it easily in case of leaks.
Tank capacity
The tank should be of reasonable capacity, which means not too big. The bigger the tank capacity, the harder it will be for the wick of the coil to be properly soaked/saturated when you have low juice amount (initial or remaining). My favorite capacity for convenience is 2ml and it should be rather easy to get a tank with this capacity because a lot of sub-ohm tanks with bulb glass are also provided with straight 2ml spare glass or at least 2ml spare glasses for the tank are available on the market. I'd avoid >5ml tanks anyway, especially if no smaller spare glass for it is available on the market.
Note that 24-25mm sub-ohm tanks or below tend to become scarce on the market nowadays. Choice will be larger for 26mm tanks.
Tank available coils
Technically speaking, sub-ohm coil refers to coils with lower than 1Ω impedance but for powerful and efficient DMT aerosolization, coils for the tank should be available in the 0.15Ω-0.5Ω range. The lower the Ω value, the more you'll need power to fire the coil, the higher will be aerosol production. Around 0.3Ω coils are usually well-balanced for versatile use, you don't necessarily need to go for coils with the lowest as possible Ω value (0.15Ω for example). Of course you could also use > 0.5Ω coils too but higher impedance coils will be less efficient and may lead you to increase the power to levels that could scorch the coil or the precious spice quickly.
Some coils models can be meshed, you can favor them as they usually deliver aerosol more efficiently by increasing the coil surface contact with the wick.
A few suitable sub-ohm tanks examples :
The d-juice base
The d-juice is your DMT freebase dissolved in an e-cig base you can aerosolize with the e-cig. For sub-ohm tanks, a PG (propylene glycol) and VG (glycerol) mix is usually advised as base for this purpose. To obtain higher saturation levels, 100% PG can be used because of better DMT solubility in it. 100% PG with DMT highly saturated d-juice is the favored vape pens base to compensate the weak power those devices deliver. The additional VG in sub-ohm tanks d-juice helps for better carrier and softens the aerosol feeling in lungs/throat, PG being mildly allergen and possibly airway irritating for some people. On the other hand, DMT has poor solubility in VG hence a mix of both in most cases, with at least 50% PG.
PG+VG mix can be 50% PG/50% VG, 60% PG/40% VG, 70% PG//30% VG and so on up to 100% PG/0% VG but the latter isn't the most recommended for sub-ohm tank use.
Premixed PG/VG base can be purchased but shouldn't contain more than 50% VG. It should be neutral (no aromas/no nicotine). A 50% PG/50% VG blend is a good starting point. If you want to adjust the PG/VG ratio more precisely according to your preferences you could get separate PV and VG bottles and mix them the way you want. Some might want to add aromas but I don't recommend, they add risk and might hide the taste which can be an indicator when things turn wrong.
How to start your journey with your setup
A 1g DMT freebase/2,5ml 50% PG-50% VG base (= 1,25ml PG+1,25ml VG) ratio is a good starting point for a versatile use. Make your juice by adding the DMT freebase to the PG+VG mix, then heat it slightly to help the spice dissolve while gently shaking the container in which you make your juice. Once the spice perfectly dissolved, transfer the juice to your tank. Set your mod power appropriately (see below). Take puff(s) lasting from 3 to 10 seconds. Keep the aerosol in lungs for about 10 seconds. Release. Enjoy.
Remarks
Power settings
Power settings-wise, when you experiment a device for the first time, always start low (<= 20 watts) then increase gradually until you find the sweet spot. Usual power used for 0.2Ω-0.4Ω coils impedance range should be in the 20-30 watts range in a reliable and safe-to-use perspective but you still could follow you own path according to your preferences or specific tank/coils needs. Keep in mind that inappropriate power settings (= too high) might generate e-cig base toxic by-products and also quickly scorch the coil and the d-juice.
Inhalation tension/pace
Be aware that your inhalation tension/pace is the ultimate non-material parameter aside the setup choice, the settings and the juice concentration to modulate the aerosol strength and efficiency. The slower the inhalation pace, the denser the aerosol, the hotter the coil, the stronger the effects. Take it in account when you adjust the settings of your devices.
About the d-juice DMT/PG/VG ratios
Lower juice concentration (more PG/VG base - less DMT) could withstand higher power before it starts scorching the DMT in the d-juice, but in my experience, you'd better use more concentrated d-juices, which you can aerosolize with less power to obtain the same result with lower base toxic by-products risk, considering PG is more heat sensitive than VG. Lower power use with higher juice concentration should remain in sight : longer battery life, more versatility, less health hazard. Puffs length and inhalation tension will allow you to modulate the effects intensity. Not to mention lower power use will lead to gentler aerosol.
On the other hand, d-juice with too much DMT in it tend to scorch the DMT faster. It will be less forgiving to over-heating as the molecule is rather heat sensitive. Too much DMT in the d-juice will increase DMT scorching and low room temperature re-crystallization risks.
Ratio between PG and VG is important too. While more PG could lead to more toxic by-products risks (thus more irritating for lungs), more VG would need more power for proper aerosolization, thereby increasing PG by-products risk. Both are needed to maintain a good equilibrium : PG provides good solubility to DMT while VG helps for better aerosol carrier.
Over time I have experienced most of PG/VG base ratios, from 20% to 100% PG. I came to conclusion that 50% of each provides the best equilibrium. You still can adjust according to your preferences but keep in mind the flaws related to inappropriate ratios. I don't recommend extreme ratios like 100% PG or >70% VG for sub-ohm tanks use.
With and adequate PG/VG/DMT ratio you can just dip your toes as well as fully blast-off if that's what you want. The latter could be more difficult to achieve with too diluted d-juices, which in return could encourage you to increase power to unreasonable levels, thus increasing higher PG toxic by-products risk.
All these points are why you should keep the equilibrium between DMT amounts, PG/VG base amounts, PG/VG base ratios and power settings.
1g DMT with 2.5ml base made of 1.25ml PG and 1.25ml VG (50%/50%) can take you wherever you want. It's in my opinion the golden ratio for most of sub-ohm tanks with 0.3Ω coils.. It is the best I've experienced in terms of equilibrium between efficiency, versatility, reliability, lower health hazard and higher gentleness of the aerosol.
The future of DMT aerosolization : DMT citrate e-juice versus PDO for aerosol smoothness
More advanced users could also show interest to the DMT citrate e-juice tek thread. However, although the underlying idea is very interesting, the tek still needs adjustments in my opinion. Quite a few people seem to report difficulties to find an equilibrium between aerosol gentleness and efficiency while keeping health hazard at low level.
As an experienced e-cig user with nicotine as well as DMT, I struggled too to find a good equilibrium and reliability with this tek that I intensely explored too. I first was very enthusiastic about it but over time I found it lacking reliability and long-term use perspective. Nowadays, I tend to think it is not necessarily the best approach for aerosol gentleness (among other criteria), which is one of the main tek's goal.
I'm currently exploring the PDO (1,3-propanediol) as an effective natural-originated PG substitute with promising results. Of course, I need to experiment it deeper, especially with sensitive lungs friends (aka guinea pigs) to report later how it behaves in this case. It could be a decent, more easy-to-dial and easy-to-use and over all more well-balanced alternative to the DMT citrate tek, a fortiori when we take in account the insights I gave in the About the d-juice DMT/PG/VG ratios section above. The petro-chemical PG could be advantageously replaced by the PDO in the future without general d-juice approach changes. PG could just be replaced by the PDO in the same amounts. The main flaw I can see with it for the moment is its poor market availability outside of France. I hope this point will improve in the future. Detailed data about the PDO safety profile and physicochemical behavior are provided in the experiences thread I have with it.
