A little help with making DMT Fumarate please.

Hi Folks
I wanted to try and make some fumarate as per this TEK:-
Everything seemed to go OK except to near the end.
I had my precipitate in a small glass and wanted to transfer it to a larger container to dry, so I added some more acetone to help me swill it out. I thought the precipitate would not dissolve in the acetone but it just disappeared which was worrying. Anyway I tipped it into the dish and let it dry. Now, after three days of drying I have some yellow slightly waxy product a seen in the picture.

I used 850mg DMT and it now weighs 630mg if that's important.
I was expecting to get a white powder so my question is, what have I made and is it safe to consume orally?
If not is there anything I can do to rescue the situation.
Thanks for looking.

The DMT fumarate will dissolve in acetone that's not completely dry, which seems likely to have been what's happened in your case. Dry acetone is pretty hygroscopic, so it stops being anhydrous once exposed to the atmosphere in absence of a desiccant. The colour of your DMT fumarate looks to be within the normal range - it only takes a tiny amount of oxidation for the material to take on quite an intense coloration.

One can only assume that the missing 220mg of DMT remained in the acetone after the first precipitation, either because of insufficient fumaric acid being added , or because of excess moisture in the acetone. Another possibility might be that your freebase was heavily contaminated with naphtha and therefore weighed too much - and how accurate would you say your scales are? Have you calibrated them?

If your acetone was of good quality your product should be safe enough for consumption. Otherwise, you may want to try recrystallising it again from boiling ANHYDROUS isopropyl alcohol.

Thanks for the reply Transform.
My scales are pretty accurate and tested regularly. The freebase was made some time ago and is very pure/dry so I think the acetone must of been wet.
I tried dissolving a little of what I have in water and it disappeared completely so I think it is the fumarate :)
Is there a way of ensuring that there is no water in the acetone?

You need to dry your acetone before you use it, unless you’re buying (rather expensive) dry acetone it going to have water in it. Use either dry epsom salt or molecular sieves to make it dry.

Method

Dry Epsom salt in a oven on high heat for about an hour or so and then when cooled down add a couple spoonful to a bottle of acetone. Shake then let it sit and decant after 24 hours.

Good luck

Also remember your acetone can absorb moisture even after making it anhydrous. Living in a particularly humid area won’t help if you are exposing it to air.. I’ve run into this issue a few times. I’d make sure your keeping it in a well sealed jar and open it as little as possible/keep in as small a vessel possible once made anhydrous.
