Anyone try absinthe here at the nexus? what's the experience like, is it at all different than just regular alcohol intoxication?

I just ordered some wormwood to make some. I've heard it can be pretty visual for 20-30 minutes after drinking, then alcohol effects afterwards

My experiences with absinthe were pretty interesting, I've had a few glasses mixed with LSD and no effects were really noticed. With excessive amounts of homemade absinthe I experienced a special alcohol like intoxication, one which was quite clear headed and stimulating, while simultaneously very relaxing. The secret is in the wormwood. :p

Iv'e been researching it for a few hours now and the government recently legalized in 2007 after it being illegal for over a century to protect us (at first i think they thought it was making people happy and "hallucinating" and connecting with their true nature etc. stuff like dmt, mescaline, lsd etc all the good expanding molecules)...the reason? Thunjone is classified and has been scientifically studied to show it's a convulsant (probably at higher doses). But it's just funny that they would legalize it now that it's shown to have convulsive activity. What a loving a caring system we have. It still not that discouraging tho. Sounds like something worth trying though. Thanks folks for the input.

I actually tried Absinthe 85 proof a week ago for the first time. It became interesting after 4 shots. Everything was flickering in a good way. My hand had this flicker trace effect when I moved it. Whiskey has always been my no 1 drink but after having Absinthe, Ive found a new favorite. The effects were pleasant.

I tried making my own using everclear, wormwood, anise and fennel seed along with some other spices for flavor, speaking for visuals it didn't do anything. Even used more wormwood than the recipe called for

I had an absinthe experience where I had visuals that looked like nightmare before christmas effects for about 20 minutes worth of weird CEV's...

Felt like death the next day, however.

It may be worthwhile to note that wormwood in very large amounts can be dangerous..so people making their own absinthe should take care not to add too much wormwood..
There are some reports on erowid of people having bad effects from too much wormwood.

I think all the hype about absinth is due to the bad propaganda it received in the old days.

If I remember right, there was a point when they were producing a cheap version of it which contained lead. The delirious state created by lead poisoning and the growing alcoholism just helped spreading the legends about it.

IMHO it's just a very strong spirit with some uninteresting alkaloids in it.

That doesn't sound appealing one single bit. I don't really like alcohol nowadays, i used to drink a 30 pack with the boys in the hood every weekend sometimes a 30 pack consecutive days between 3 or 4 people, it just doesn't hit me like it used to, it's like your searching for that first intoxication like with any other hard drug, i'll only drink if it's something new and made from like fermented apples or something searching for a more pure/different/clean intoxication than keystone/bud light or jack daniels. I think i change my mind :surprised i didn't have a strong urge to try it anyways - thanks for pointing that out - and i read those on erowid too :thumb_dow .

I remember trying Absinthe about 10 years ago when I first saw it in the liquor store. I remember it tasting as though someone had made licorice flavored aftershave or gasoline and had mistakenly given me a shot. It was about 75% alcohol so about 140 proof or so. Very hard to down a few of these shots. I also remember its color. The color reminded me of the toxic waste in the TV show "The Simpsons"... It had a certain glow to it that was really quite hypnotizing to be honest. I can't say for sure if I had any effects from the wormwood itself as I am fairly sure any effects I felt were from the high percentage of alcohol and the fact I only ever had two or three shots at the most.

I've seen a lot of absinthe and it doesn't "glow", it's usually clear to a translucent light green.

Watching too many movies? ;p

I had one shot of absinthe at a neighbors house. Tasted as described. Of course at that amount nothing but a warm feeling down my throat to my gut. Not a big alcohol person though. Never desired another shot of it.

Makers Mark however, I could sip a shot of that right now, if I only had any in the house that is.

Id much prefer this

I'm pretty sure that the Absinthe allowed in to the US must have extremely low levels of Thujone, which is supposed to be the active ingredient. I cannot stand the taste myself and have tried a few different brands. Hard to get down enough to really experience much. I have heard that white sage contains a good amount of Thujone and does not have the same negative properties that wormwood has. I have heard of people extracting the Thujone from white sage (with pure grain alcohol like everclear) and either spiking their low Thujone absinthe with it, or even evaping it and reducing it down into a resin and smoking it. It is supposed to have a sleepy, dream-like quality to it. Have not tried either myself yet. White sage is pretty plentiful, cheap and legal, so maybe try your own experiments. Post any interesting info if you do.

Haha no... I'm sure it's just the fact it was a pretty cheap bottle of absinthe and had a pretty good amount of coloring in it.

I would have to say that Absinthe is definitely one of if not my favourite alcoholic drink.
To do it in shots is a good way to get sick. How about some absinthe cocktails? 😁

In my experience, you'll fall asleep/pass out before you experience any convulsant effects from it (with labelled/store bought/proper stuff anyway)..

good times, good stuff...

I've done some research with other spices that were used for medicinal purposes long ago. I've posted about them here a while back in another thread. Anyways, I personally think that too much attention has been put on the wormwood in Absinthe. Wormwood contains thujone, but that has really only been shown to produce convulsions. This is not at all mind enhancing, in fact it's rather unpleasant as anyone who has ever tried the essential oil of wormwood can attest (I used it on my skin once and felt awful all day).

The so called "holy trinity" of Absinthe is fennel, anise seed, and wormwood. I think the wormwood aids absorption of a compound in fennel and anise seed. This compound I am referring to is called estragole, aka methyl chavicol. This compound was treated by Shulgin under the infamous Essential Amphetamine section. Estragole is classified under the allyl benzene class of chemicals, and there are many of them. They are found in spices that are universally legal and available.

I have made a very potent Absinthe-like alcoholic drink using a variety of these compounds. I simply soaked a bunch of spices in 2 gallons of box wine. I put together the whole concoction for about $10 US. I didn't get the shakes but I got a very lucid, mildly visually enhanced sensation. It lasted about 8 hours.

Slight thread resurrection but I thought I'd add to the discussion, seeing as I just had some Absinthe a few hours ago. It's definitely a different intoxication to normal alcohol. After one drink prepared the traditional way, I started experiencing a warm euphoria, some dissociation in the head (reminded me of a low dose DXM head feeling) and musical/aural enhancement. After a second drink I experienced enhanced colour saturation when watching television (just like when someone turns up the saturation on the TV adjustments). After a third drink the alcoholic effects started to overlap too much over the secondary effects absinthe is known for.

Definitely worth a try to see if you like it, I definitely do, it has some interesting secondary effects separate to the alcohol that make it an enjoyable tipple when used in moderation.
