Acid/base VS Straight-to-base extraction?

Migrated topic.

The straight to base extraction seems to be much easier to perform. And ive read reports of good yields from this method. So i wonder why one might still want to perform an acid/base extraction?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of performing an acid/base versus a straight to base extraction on MHRB in terms of yield, purity, toxicity etc.

If the source plant was Psychotria or Anadenanthera, than an STB tech would be horrible. Forget even trying it. You'd end up with a bunch of fatty oily crap mixed with the alkaloids. You'd spend too much time cleaning up the alkaloids, in which case an A/B extraction would be less trouble. But with Mimosa there's very little fat or oils, so it works pretty good.

The yields all depend on how you do the STB Mimosa extraction. Person A claims X results, person B claims Y results. Such is usually the case. SWIM has argued many times with others about extraction techs which SWIM uses that work great for SWIM but work horribly for some other SWIMs.

Case in point: SWIM ALWAYS USES pH 9.5 and gets really good results in A/B extractions, but knows other SWIMs that say they need pH 13 or they get crappy results.

It’s all about technique, the little details that are left out of the tech that can make a big difference. For example, how a person uses a separatory funnel can mean the different between 99% yields from 3 pulls or 10% yields from 3 pulls. It’s all about technique.
