Hello, travellers, I wanted to share an experiment I conducted (somewhat unintentionally) regarding long-term basification in a standard Straight to Base extraction. While most extractions are completed within days, I left my basified mimosa mixture sitting for six months before proceeding with the extraction. The results were quite interesting:
Experiment Setup:
Materials: Lye, water, MHRB powder, salt, and naphtha.
Procedure: I mixed the lye, water, and powdered MHRB as usual, then added naphtha and let it sit. Initially, I intended to wait only a few weeks to observe any changes, but life got in the way, and I ended up leaving it for around six months before extracting.
Extraction Method: After the long wait, I proceeded as normal. I separated the naphtha with a pipette, performed three water washes with hot water to remove any residual base, and precipitated the extract in the freezer for around 6 hours.
Results:
Appearance: The final product is the dirtiest-looking brown DMT goo I have ever seen.
Texture: It looks like a wet paste rather than the usual crystalline powder. I haven't scraped it yet, so I'm still not sure if it will solidify at some point.
Smell: Despite the dark color, it smells just like normal DMT. There are no signs of unpleasant or chemical odors that sometimes indicate the extraction wasn't as clean as It could be.
Yield: I haven’t scraped it yet, so I’m not sure how the final yield compares to a fresh extraction. I’ll update once I do.
Recrystallization: I haven't tested it yet, but it might be interesting to see if it can be cleaned up with a recrystallization step. Maybe this requires a mini A/B? I'm not sure.
Next Steps:
I’ll scrape it soon and see if it stays gooey or solidifies somewhat.
I might try recrystallizing to see if the brown color is removable.
Has anyone else left an StB mixture for an extended period? If so, what were your results?
Any thoughts on what’s happening chemically over this long period of basification?
What do you think are the causes? I'm wondering if the MHRB has broken down over time, and other plant compounds may have been extracted that normally wouldn’t be present in a short-duration StB extraction.
Here's a couple pictures of the brown extract.
