Aluminum + citric + mhrb... a problem?

Migrated topic.

SWIM hates dogma. In nearly every tek the author states to stay away from aluminum. This includes the Marsofold tek amongst others. What could possibly go wrong using aluminum before anything is basified? Could invisible pieces of aluminum really cause a problem? Seems HIGHLY unlikely. Obviously lye+aluminum = elementary school experiment, but is there reason behind the madness? Why a crock pot? Why ceramic or stainless at this point? AGAIN, once a base enters the equation, this is no longer an interesting question to anyone (hopefully).

Essentailly if aluminum is bad for one part of the extraction it's not welcome for any part of the extraction because somone who doesnt know allot will assume that if he was able to use aluminum for this part of a extraction then heck he should be able to use it for all of the extraction. It's just 'general' safety. If you know for sure when you can safely use aluminum then you can do that but extraction teks are written so that everyone can use them so we have to assume whoever is reading doesnt know squat about chemistry.

That came to SWIMs mind the moment send was clicked. Someone who has limited equipment and wants to do everything in one pull could make this mistake. Or more likely, limited understanding. Understood. Thanks.

And welcome back Vovid! Happy to see you are back and able to help teach.. I'm always watching for you Deep Thought stuff to appear one day!
