Hmm, I'm not sure this would help any of us long term visitors much. And for one who may be paranoid enough to use a proxy, I can also see them not wanting to even create an account.

It's just an added layer between you and the world. I think if I could spend a few hours adding an extra layer of security I would, no?

I guess it's just the paranoid internet junkie in me coming out (and a holiday weekend project sounds nice).
 
It sounds like a noble project, a1pha, go for it. I use Tor with bridges and wifi on occasion. New-coming members may benefit from its usage prior and after registration. However, for those of us who have already registered and made posts with our real IP addresses, I doubt this will help.
 
Oh, I have no intention of hiding my IP from this site. I've been a member for a few years and I'm sure Traveler has it logged somewhere.

The point of this is for anyone wishing to add extra security to their browsing habits. Who knows, in a few years time - this whole DMT thing might be a lot more sensitive...

I'm very interested in this topic. I'd ultimately like to know how to build a totally secure linux Box, using tor and a tomato router (?). Something of a side project - I'd assume that you'd only want to block a small percentage of your time on the internet, so the long relay time isn't a huge concern to me.

A walkthrough that I can comprehend seems intriguing.

Staying tuned for this one.

Tor seems to be sufficient for anonymous browsing. what do you use for instant messaging?
Here as a little tool, already integrated in a few clients on mac and linux. you can use it with miranda or trillian too (trillian i dont know if it is supported in the current release).

for Voice i use teampspeak on my own server with encryption. what do you think of that one? how secure is it (never read anything about the encryption of teamspeak).

TOR uses SOCKS which can route other traffic besides HTTP. Simply tell your IM client to use the SOCKS proxy localhost:9050 and it should work OK.

I've been pushing forward on this subject and will have a write-up here soon.
 
I don't have a static IP address, it seems to change every time my router restarts. Does my ISP forever remember who had which address? Is it a law, or do they voluntarily retain? Thanks!
 
^IP's are probably logged by ISP, but more importantly, all the data that gets sent/received from your location is as well.
This is why TOR is a good thing.

This is called dynamic IP and yes, your ISP records who had which IP at what time. TOR is good at solving this problem.

However, keep in mind TOR will not solve all your problems. While masking your IP you still leave behind a unique fingerprint. Also, having Javascript, flash, etc enabled provides the agent on the other side your IP and other identifiable information regardless of how well you mask yourself. It's like robbing a bank with a mask and leaving your DNA behind.
