Are Heat Baths Effective?

I am doing the 500g 'bootstrap tek' which you can find here:

I don't usually do the heat bath for my previous method but I'm trying this because it is for more bark and my last was only 100g. I have a 2L Kilner clip-top mason jar and was wondering if any of you have used the same jar for a heat bath? I use the rubber seal on the jar only when I am mixing but I could remove it while heating to prevent pressure buildup. What temp would you heat it to? Low, medium? Also how long would you bathe it? This is my last remaining bark, but more will be ordered tomorrow. I appreciate any advice you may have.

Why 500g at once? I recommend scaling back.

I don't remember the exact temp, but you should be able to handle the jar with your hands, so a lower heat setting. A little higher tends to be fine as well.
If this is for the acid cook, do so for 8 hours. If it's for the base, cook for 2, stirring occasionally.
And your jar is fine. Just don't clamp it shut during the baths.

And definitely consider downscaling your extraction size, there's no advantage to doing 500g at once but the risks are correspondingly higher.

Interesting post. I was also disturbed by the large and unnecessary extraction size. What also got me was in the picture the image of "Universal Lighter Fluid," which I believe is butane. I'm not sure if that would work or is appropriate or is even pure.

I've looked up this 'bootstrap' tek and would say a few things about it. I don't see the need for PH measurement at all since it is too easy to reach very high PH and there are a lot of obvious indicators for this, both for STB and A/B using NaOH.

Heat is not necessary so neither is borosilicate glassware which can raise suspicions all on it's own. I would say about 25 degrees is good. As long as you don't use too much solvent it should reach enough saturation to freeze precipitate.

Pandora, as for the solvent I doubt it will be pure butane as that is only liquid under high pressure.

Mushie_Man, I recommend you reuse the solvent as much as possible if you want to extract the maximum from this high volume of bark. It's still better to use less as others have said. Do another extraction later when you have more experience. Don't throw all your eggs in one basket.
