Black smoke-like stuff in DMT/naphtha?

Migrated topic.

I've been fiddling around with DMT for a little while now, with several successful extractions and many great trips, but a minute ago I saw something unexpected. I was doing STB with naphtha from Mimosa hostilis, and had gotten to the point where I was letting it freeze-precipitate... some of it had already precipitated when I realized that I had forgotten to do my sodium carbonate wash. So I thought, why not redissolve the spice by heating and shaking, and then washing it with sodium carb and then freeze precipitate. I've done that once before, and it worked just fine. But just now, as I was (very gently) heating the naphtha/DMT by placing my sep funnel in a pot of warm water, I pretty much immediately saw a weird black smoke-like substance appear within the naphtha. After some shaking, it disappeared, and I went on to do my sodium carb wash. It is now in the freezer and tomorrow I'll be able to assess yield. But in the meantime, can anyone explain the black wispy stuff?? It was only spice and naphtha, and the black wispy stuff appeared with the application of only a small amount of heat.

sounds weird; don't know what could cause that, and have never heard about it either. would like to know just as much as you about this.
keep us updated about your freeze-precipitated yield. if it looks much different from a white color, then it must be a contam; but your freeze-precip'ed stuff is white, then thats even more weird..
p.s. pics would help

Yeah, I'll give an update tomorrow about the yield. The naphtha is a medium yellow right now, looks like it'll give some spice in the morning. I should maybe also add that there was a lot of pressure in the sep funnel as I was shaking/heating the naphtha.

Update: the harvest yielded pretty much exactly the amount expected, of a slightly yellow fluffy spice, and this has been bioassayed if you know what I mean... nothing seems out of the ordinary. Hmm. I still wonder what that black stuff was :? Oh well! :d
