Swim has been trying to figure out the easiest way of boiling IPA in order to clean mescaline carbonate. He does not want to buy an electric stove just for this, so he was thinking of sealing some 99% IPA in a plastic ziplock bag, and then immersing this bag in near-boiling water. He just has 2 questions:

1) Has anyone had success with this method in the past?

2) Could IPA dissolve some of the plastic bag?

plastic bag go POP...and if there are flames and enough fumes...BOOM

and im wondering why you have to boil the IPA to clean mescaline carbonate..never heard of taht before..maybe im behind the times

Weird idea to think of plastic bags and boiling solvents.
There's still open flame with the burners turned off of a gas stove. Bringing the pot of water outside would be a safer solution.

It's part of a tek posted by phlux-, which basically calls for crude mesc carbonate to be dissolved in 99% IPA, and then put in the freezer to make crystals of mesc carbonate form. I was thinking the warmer the IPA, the less of it I'd need to dissolve the crude mescaline carbonate. And less amount required to dissolve mecaline carbonate --> more crystal formation

Boiling IPA is supposed to be good for recrystalizing mesc HCl.

I was thinking if the plastic bag had the air squeezed out of it first, it might not pop so readily. Nobody else has tried this?

I thought of doing something like this as well, but I don't want the 99% IPA to pick up moisture from the boiling water. The only way to prevent that would be to put the IPA in a closed container... and you know what they say about heating closed containers

Lol yeah I know. Someone suggested it to me here a while ago when I asked about boiling IPA before, I didn't think of it myself

Not that he's proud of this or anything, but in the past, SWIM has used a MICROWAVE to bring alcohol to boiling.

He doesn't actually know how safe this truly is, but it works excellently if done in short bursts with a careful eye on the surface of the liquid.

Then there was that time that SWIM left the microwave going a little too long and the shot glass full of alcohol exploded its contents all over the microwave walls. That was a bit scary, he said, but it did get his microwave pretty clean.

I can see the headlines now. :\

Why is it so necessary to clean up this carbonate? Are the impurities severely negatively affecting the experience?

Yeah, a lot of our SWIMs greatly prefer the pure mescaline over the full spectrum extract.

Plus with each pull from the cactus sauce, you get a different ratio of mescaline to non-mescaline alkaloids.

Mescaline with the other alkaloids (extracted from SWIM's peruvian torch) is like a really weak cactus tea. Pure mescaline isolated from that full spectrum extract is more like LSD. It's much more potent, and very nice - says SWIM.

Plus, it's a dry crystal - not a blob of reddish black goop.

It's not necessary to boil the IPA to clean it up to satisfaction, but SWIM does understand that it would be cool to recrystallize from boiling IPA.

All that's necessary is to use 99% IPA (SWIM has had success from 91%, and even more dilute IPA actually), and put it in the freezer to settle. It's just like an acetone or MEK wash on hydrochloride or acetate.

Two or three of these IPA washes should leave SWIY with some pretty pure crystals.

SWIY can pick up an electric skillet from any thrift store for super cheap. This could be an excellent heat source for a hot water bath.

It would surely get the IPA boiling, and there is no open flame.

For future reference, here is what my friend wound up doing. He put about 120 mL 99% IPA in a wine bottle, and put a long mercury thermometer in the bottle as well. He then used an electric stove to heat a water bath, and put the wine bottle in at an angle. His thinking was that the long neck of the wine bottle would prevent most of the vapors from the boiling water from mixing with the IPA. He was able to bring the IPA to a boil without incident, and did everything far away from sources of ignition. He cannot be sure, but it seems to have worked well.
