swim has access to ammonium hydroxide, a powerful base, but is not sure if it can be used as a substitute for NaOH. Any help would be much obliged!

Maybe i should add that i didn't try an extraction with ammoniumhydroxid but as the pH is just a number for how many OH- ions dissociated into the solution you should be fine with any base that produces a high enough pH

hey bytemaster, thanks for your help so far. my friend used all the ammonium hydroxide he had to base up his water, but only hit 12 according to his PH paper(he's a newbie :) Now he's wondering if he can add lye to the water/ ammonium hydroxide solution (he has no more ammonium hydroxide, but does have some lye) will mixing these two compounds be problematic/dangerous? he is doing his internet research now, but would appreciate your help as well. thanks so much

word Noman, he's been lurking this forum for a while and benefits greatly from your posts. he is using your tek for his first attempt at spice extraction. he will add his crushed mhrb to his ph 12 solution now, and when he gets his lye in 2 or 3 days (it's in the mail), add enough to kick up the PH to 13+ will let you know how it goes.... thanks for sharing your knowledge
