Cannatonic - High CBD strain extraction for medicinal use

My good friend is an old vet with brain cancer and has a good amount of Cannatonic trim. The buds were tested at 17% CBD. I've been mulling over ideas for medicinal consumption. Kief capsules crossed my mind. Butane hash oil dissolved in (ethanol?) mixed with water and peppermint oil for sublingual spray administration- feasible? Or will there be dissolving issues?

Is there any way an amateur like me could isolate or at least partially isolate the CBD or is that tech?

Any thoughts on the matter greatly appreciated. What would you do given this situation?

It doesn't sound easy. I suppose it could be painstakingly done with TLC, but probably the easiest way to separate THC and CBD would use their different vaporization points. Top of my head, I would try an approach like this:

- Extraction of oil with EtOH (and yes, using as much trim and leaf as possible since generrally there's more CBD in the leaves than in the buds proportionally speaking, and chances are this will apply to Cannatonic strain as well)

- Evaporation or boiling, maybe using Rick Simpsons method to yield an oil with the concentrated phytocannabinoids

- Vaporizing the oil in a vaporizer that allows for vapor collecting if you want to distill THC, at around 160ºC (CBD vaporization point is almost 190ºC)

The remaining product should be as CBD high as you can get without rolling up your sleeves with lab equipment. In any case, if what you want to avoid is the THC high, the relative percentages of CBD and THC in Cannatonic should deliver pretty clean results.

afaik juicing is one of the more efficient way of getting cbd.. as long as you don't decarboxylate the thc it won't be psychoactive, so there is no need to isolate it from the thc (i would imagine).

there may be a way to extract it further from there(maybe use an immiscible solvent to pull it out of the juice?).

TLC wouldn't really help much as you can only separate and isolate microamounts.

House, unless you're experienced in some column chromatography approach of some sorts, there is no easy and reliable method of enriching for CBD. But if your buds are 17% CBD, a simple alcohol tincture would serve you well. Also, how much THC your bud has? If it is negligible, there might be no need to isolate CBD. Or you just want CBD free as much as possible from other cannabinoids?

Thanks ya'll. 3% THC was tested, unlike most good indoor which is around 17%-23% or so. Think I'll go with kief capsules and a tincture to compare. Would love to learn how to isolate these compounds someday but for now this should be ok. A balanced profile is probably more effective anyway. Just wanted to make something my friend can take without getting high... we shall see.

As a side note I've been hearing of people paying off the chemists that do these tests so the grower can get higher numbers so these tests can't always be trusted at a dispensary unless you do it yourself.

Not sure what WercShop is but maybe its a place to find some analysis that may accept mailed samples depending on where in the world you are.

Tincture is best for not getting too high in my opinion. It can go straight to the skull but it has a more body effect IME. Over-all though if a CBD ratio is high enough it will nullify the majority of the 'high' from the THC and other active cannabinoids. It still may knock a person on their proverbial ass but the high wouldn't be overwhelming. Ideally of course...


Sadly the isolation of CBD isn't too easy. As infundibilum has said it usually requires column chromatography. It has been rumored to be a difficult separation as well. Endlessness mentioned "preparitive TLC" in a thread but I fear it would take a window panel size TLC plate to yield a few grams. if you need tips on this PM me and I'll see what I can find for you by way of journal article's and will be practical.

On thinking about destruction I don't see it as a viable route either as just about anything that would wreck THC would also wreck the CBD.

Hopefully your friend get's better I hear medicinal mushrooms have been known to stump tumour growth and such, know you're fresh on all that though. Peace.
