Charcoal Filtered Smoking Apparatus (9mm glass slide)

These are commonly found in high-end headshops. A glass-on-glass 9mm (most often) glass bulb that holds activated carbon into which a normal 9mm glass slide/bowlpiece slides into.

Anyone ever used one when smoking changa or spice?

These filters are normally slid into a bong, of course, but I just recently got one of these (even though I don't own a bong) and have been smoking hash or bud through it instead simply attached to a 24" piece of 1/2" width rubber tubing- no water-cooling action, and easier to take smaller hits of dense smoke. I now use it %80 of the time that I smoke cannabis; I love it.

Doesn't take away a lot from smoking cannabis, noticeably cleans the smoke a little....wondering how much, if any, it would detract from spice or changa being smoked.

I'll get around to actually trying this sometime but was wondering if anyone was doing this already and liked it.

My piece was about $30.00 and the activated carbon (which is changed and discarded after a good number of bowls) is bought for very-cheap at aquarium supply stores.

If you were to be vaporizing a pure substance it seems to me that might reduce the amount of active substance you receive. More surface area means more places for the smoke to cool and condense back into a solid. So I'm not so sure about straight spice. Intuitively it seems pyrolized plant matter should produce enough random stuff for the charcoal to be effective. If you try it please report back. I am definitely going to pick up one of those glass on glass charcoal bulbs you mentioned and when I get around to trying it I will report back as well.

Yes to all of the above. I also can't see any reason to use this with pure dmt. I do, however, want to try this with some changa and perhaps even some jungle spice that is simply melted on top of some ash or a little bit of cannabis.

For anyone who hasn't used one of these in a bong with cannabis before let me tell you that they clean the smoke way more than you would think...if you change the charcoal often, the bong will stay clean, and I don't mean "less dirty", I mean it actually stays clean.

It would steal a bit of the actives in dmt/changa smoke, but if it was only barely noticeable, the smoother smoke would be worth the teeny-tiny waste of actives.

While I am going to shell out for the glass VG in the future, (because everyone here has got me totally sold on them) I have not wanted to shell out $200++ dollars for a good glass-on-glass bong that fits this apparatus. The hashish and cannabis I can smoke here is so strong that I only need a hit or two and spending 86cents on a piece of rubber tubing that fit this filter was a sweet deal, even if it looks a little ghetto.

I think so to. But my point above was that if the smoke is a little smoother you might be able to get more in your lungs. Yes, it will probably steal some of your actives, BUT the smoke/vapor itself is not going to be less potent.

If 50mg of substance y produces x amount of vapor when combusted...

and if x amount of vapor holds q amount of actives...

and if the charcoal sucks out z% of the actives out of x amount of vapor...

then x amount of vapor running through the filter would contain (q * (100%-z%)) actives compared to x amount of vapor not running through the filter which would contain q actives.

So how exactly would the filtered vapor not be less potent if it's the same amount of vapor with less actives than unfiltered vapor?

It wouldn't be. My statement by itself doesn't make sense; I could have clarified better. Iam talking about the volume you're able to inhale comfortably. Iam talking about obtaining a bigger hit in your lungs (with changa in particular), just as some get better "results" with a water-cooled bong.

Now, I don't own a bong and tend not to use them for smoking anything, so when I lay on the bed and hit a glass spoon style pipe full of changa perhaps I could get a "better result" (a "bigger hit") from instead inhaling through the filter.

This is the experience I've had with smoking hash through it; perhaps that's irrelavent, perhaps not....And let me add that I realize this thread would be more interesting if I had gotten around to trying this already, but Iam eager to engage in discussion here and become a member. Your point is well taken SnozzleBerry and I appreciate the response; I could have worded what I was thinking better.

Ahhhh, I see what you're saying. Well, assuming it doesn't filter out too many of your actives, it would be very interesting to see how it works. If you do end up getting/using this, I'd be interested in knowing how it goes for you.

I'll be sure to let everyone know later. I also awcknowledge it could get too wasteful, but you can adjust the level of carbon in these things if you want as well.

I just started using a carbon filter when poking smot,lol. I won't go back. The hits are far smoother because it filters out a lot of carcinogens. The buzz is cleaner as well. Before I would get a film of resin on my lips if I took 2 bong tokes in a row. I could wipe off the resin with a tissue like it was a golden brown lipstick. I do not have that issue anymore since I started using a carbon filter.

I have not used it with spice or changa yet. I am not sure how much active alkaloids it would filter out but I think it would not filter much out at all. That's just my opinion.

yea it shouldnt filter too much but would probably filter more than when smoking weed/baccy and when smoking spice in a pipe.
when things like dmt, crack etc are vapourised they tend to re-crystalise to some extent when the vapours cooled, if you look at your crack or spice pipe after a decent session you will see it all stuck to the sides. now if you add another filter in there you may find that more actives get lost as the filter will further cool the vapour which in turn would leave behind more residue as more will crystallise out of the vapour before you get to inhale it.
thats just my opinion anyway, weather or not it would be enough to adversely effect the trip i dunno and expect you probably wouldnt notice it. i cant see it being worthwhile with spice as there probably isnt too much that needs filtering anyway. then again i suppose a similar thing could happen when the vapour is water cooled. except dmt isnt soluble in water. a charcoal filter would probably be very beneficial if using changa.
certainly worth trying it.
