That would be the female because it flicks its wings afaik.

As a kid I used to give them a good swat and knock one out of its flight to the ground. Then I would pick it up and fly it like a paper airplane. They would fly for 50 feet or so then land. I could get 2 or 3 flights from one before it would regain its senses well enough to fly away.

I also remember thinking that they might really be tiny alien spacecraft disguised as insects getting ready to invade the earth. I was surprisingly comfortable with that possibility.
