Colemans vs Ronsonol vs ??

Migrated topic.

I'd like to settle this for myself once and for all. Can't really find any decent naptha in Canada besides these two brands (any canadians/quebecois with suggestions?). In the States (and UK?) you have VM&P, in Australasia Shellite, but here my research seems to indicate we are serious lacking in choice.

So, I read a lot of bad accounts elsewhere of ronsonol, and for my first extraction i used Colemans, which i had read had an anti-rust agent that turned the spice blue. I freeze precipped my first four pulls, then as an experiment evapped the fifth. The freeze-precipped spice yielded small white crystals, and when gathered into a pile had an off-whitish slight yellow hue, much like the pictures I have seen countless times on the nexus. In other words the looked "normal". The fifth pull was electric teal in colour... Not so normal.

In chat, several, including I believe endlessness, advised strongly against colemans because of the bluing, and even went so far as to say that despite the colour, my first four pulls were also suspect. I have since washed the fifth pull several times in bestine (heptane) and it seems to have cleaned the crystals to a sparkling white. Again in chat, i was advised against smoking anything pulled with coleman's, including my freshly laundered 5th pull and my visibly clean first four pulls...

Questions:

A) Should I be wary of any or all of these pulls?
B) should I switch to ronsonal, which seems to have a bad reputation as well?
C) Should I avoid Coleman's at all cost?
D) Should I chuck my spice!!??? or will just cleaning it in bestine be all right?

Thanks,
JBArk

Your first pulls are fine. Coleman's fuel is an acceptable form of Naptha for extractions. Freeze percip, don't evap, and don't do more than 3 pulls (you're just getting crap after that anyway).

You'll probably get opposing viewpoints on this, but it's fine. Many people don't want to use Naptha at all. Coleman's is actually clean. Just read the MSDS.

PDF version from Coleman's site:

Good on you for asking. Always be safe.

**EDIT: If you're really worried, consider the FASA teks instead.

Evap test coleman's first. I have seen a substantial blue residue left behind by it after evap testing. You should evap test every solvent you use first. Even evap test each separate container of the same solvent!!

Colemans is the best straight off the shelf solvent I have found for DMT extraction/rextalisation in the UK.

I've used 2 cans of it and never had any blue spice, but I admit I am a bit weary to buy it again as now I can only find another coleman fuel in a different container to what I was buying before.

Just stay well away from low odour white spirit unless you don't mind waiting days for the smell to evap off of the finished spice.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I was a little confused by the docs you posted, however. The only place I found contents didn't even list naptha:

This product contains:
*Cyclohexane, CAS # 110-82-7, OSHA-300 ppm, ACGIH-300 ppm
*Nonane, CAS # 111-84-2, ACGIH-200 ppm
*Octane, CAS # 111-65-9, OSHA-400 ppm, ACGIH-300 ppm
*Heptane, CAS # 142-82-5, OSHA-500 ppm, ACGIH-400 ppm
*Pentane, CAS # 109-66-0, OSHA-1000 ppm, ACGIH-600 ppm

Unless one of those IS naptha (my knowledge of petroleum sollvents is next to nil...)

SWIM would like to suggest a simple distillation setup. It should help you to get rid of heavy fractions and additives in any contaminated solvent.

SWIM bought all necessary parts on a flea market for about $30.

sounds stinky! eventually I am moving on to a food safe tech, but I still have 3L of coleman's and a handful of lye that I don't want to waste. Distilling the solvent would stink up the house and render me "persona non grata" with the GF and probably classify me as a bad father to my 15 month old son...! In addition its still too cold here in Quebec to keep doors and windows open.

Sounds like the consensus so far is not to chuck my spice, so I am at least reassured on that front.

anyone else wanna chime in?

Thanks so far,
JBArk

Im in Ontario, and crappy tire had a choice between Colemans or this white tin that was no-name or something. Don't remember, tossed the tin. It works well for me, admittedly leaves a small film if you do a big evap test, but thats what freeze precip is for.

Yeah, Timmeh87, same thing in quebec. I went for the coleman's. I haven't found anything else, and am wary of ordering solvents...I am eventually going to go the d-liminone route, especially if I can't get a hold of anything but Coleman's (I'd trade the smell of petrochemicals for oranges any day!). Although, as stated above, my freeze precips seem pretty clean...

If you have access to Heptane why not use that to pull and eliminate any worry over the purity of the other solvents?

i recently did cybs tek with 50g of MHRB and pulled 705g of practicly white spice. This was with 2 pulls of 50ml of heptane which was freeze precipitated. You can then re-use the heptane for your other pulls.
