Cristals frozen to bottom of jar?

Migrated topic.

Heya,

I've made an (succesful) extraction of 100g bark.
Everything is in the freezer now, I checked this morning, and indeed I have many snow globes waiting to get smoked.

However, i can see there are MANY cristals at the bottom of the jar which are stuck/frozen to the bottom. And i guess i won't get them off easily

The jar was dry and airtight...

What's the easiest way to get them off? When I take it out of the fridge, should i let it stand for a while to room temperature? Or should i put it in some hot water?

Man, don't do any of what you suggested there!

First thing to do is take out the jar (after a few days) and pour out all the solvent. Then fan dry the product in there for about half an hour or until there's no scent of solvent and it's visibly dry

Then take a soup spoon and scrape it all out; it's not that hard at all

-Water will mean that you'll have to return the whole lot to a sep funnel or whatever and separate out the water, then just freeze precip again

-Letting the jar sit will result in the solvent warming up and redissolve some of your product

Don't do either of these two!

Thanks for your reply!

Argh, so it's normal it is stuck to the bottom of the jar. I thought there was water in the jar which was frozen now. But now I know it's ok.

Good information! I'll try it out.

SWIM usually does it like this: he gets his jar out of the freezer then scrapes off as much as possible from the bottom stuff with a chopstick. then he stirs it all up so the crystals will be floating around in the solvent. then he pours the solvent through a coffee filter and collects the solvent to be used in the next pulls.

he lets the filter dry out completely. then he scrapes up his crystals from the filter to a petri dish for remelting. he remelts them and puts the petri dish in a plastic container which has some desiccant bags in it and lets it sit in there a few days. he always tries to get one solid piece from remelting so there will be less surface area to degrade.

Interesting technique cheech,
But i do suspect you're doing a few unnecessary steps there

There is absolutely no problem with pouring off. All the crystal with the exception of very few floaters is always caked onto the freeze precip dish. If you pour off then dry, all you need to do is scrape up good product ready for use.

Also, how long do you take do scrape it all up?
Even just a few minutes is long enough to loose some crystal back into the solvent

I like the idea of the surface area thingy though

SWIM also does similar to cheech

When SWIM tried to just pour off the solvent and let the crystals stuck to the jar dry, and only after scrape, what happened was that small amounts of solvent stuck in between the crystals that werent poured off would heat up and melt the whole thing down.. then SWIM´s crystals would become some pile of goo on the bottom of the jar that refused to crystalize

On the other hand, if SWIM scrapped the whole thing quickly (can be done under a minute no problem) and passed through a filter, then the crystals would be all perfect on top of the filter

SWIM already read many people who had problems with either of the techniques, so each one is gonna have to find what works best for him/herself :)

Make sure to let the jar warm to room temp before allowing it to stand opened in the air for too long, else condensation could give you water in the jar. pour off the solvent first of course though, then let it warm to room temp.

Also another technique is to take your solvent with crystals on the bottom and pour about 2/3 solvent into another jar and take the last 1/3rd of solvent and stir the crystals around the solution and pour it onto a sheet of glass or mirror and let it evaporate and scrape them up off the mirror.,then repeat as nessesary,

however personally I just pour all my sovent into a baking dish and evap it all the way down to crystals.there are a few ways to get them out,I havent had much luck with filters ,especially when dealing with small amounts, the spice seemed to get caught up in the filter and stayed there.Pouring the snowglobe onto a large sheet of glass is awesome.use the remaining solvent to wash the stuck crystals off the sides of the jar with an eye dropper.
