[Datura] Germination & Grow Log

Well, a random gentleman from my work gifted me a brugmansia seed pod. I had a free cutting from some years back that I planted and grew, though at the time I didn't put much mind to taking care of it, and brought it in one winter to overwinter, and it ended up going shortly before I brought it out next season [didn't take during the next season and did zero].

Nicked some of the seeds from the pod and got them soaking for 24 hrs in lukewarm water in a thermos. Will transfer to a medium sized flat afterward, then lightly coat them with some ff ocean forest soil then probably stick them under this slight overhang [1 foot] facing east, keep them moist and see what happens. :d

They seem to really like peat, both for germination and for growth in a pot. Fast growth in peat , not so much in heavier/denser soil.

a couple months ago i repotted it but it got trampled by a dog and broke the stem at the root. The taproot itself was quite big, I left it too long in a small pot it nearly took up the entire pot.

I put the root in with some dirt/compost, but it didn't take. I didn't see any growth for a couple weeks, a few days ago I switched it back to the peat and check it out!

Prepared the small flat, drilled four holes with a 3/8 [i think?] drill bit for some drainage. I'm using ff happy frog soil, sifted through somewhat to make it more fine, though still leaving most of the organic debris throughout.

Filled the small flat with the soil mix, did a good watering with a mini water pale :d , allowing it to soak a bit down n' through. Spread the seeds over top, then taking some fresh soil and lightly going over the top; not a 'heavy' layer or anything like that, just covered enough, allowing good light penetration.

Then generously misted the top layer of soil with a bottle sized mister, allowing a nice saturation.

Put facing south. Beautiful day though, 79 high today, low 80s for the foreseeable future. The deck gets too hot during this time, so I set it perched on one of the pots.

It really took off quickly, though makes sense seeing how big the root was, there are two shoots there now!

So cool lookin. 17 days from sowing seed. Couple of the main pictures. 4 or so have sprouted.

Just wondering if its brugmansia or datura?
I'll take a pic tomorrow of my datura youngsters who came out long after I gave it up on their seeds germination, luckily I did not discard the soil so they got an extra year to sprout eventually.

I understand in some regions it's common weed, not so where I live, quite exceptionally actually. It's a little wonder to see one when making strolls. Now if I could lay hands one a belladonna 8)

Repotted the brugmansias today. They only had one set of true leaves. Reading says wait til 2 sets. Nahhh

Used fox farm ocean forest in 4in peat pots. Those little guys when carefully digging them up showed crazy long roots, many running for several inches laterally across the bottom of the flat, intersecting the roots of the other seedlings. Pretty cool, though kind of a pain to carefully dig up.

Sprayed the soil really well after repotting, keeping them moist til they get several sets of leaves.

Going to leave these guys in the shade for about a month, then slowly bring them out to the sun.

Probably going to give like 3/4 of these away, so..

Oh man, yeah they smell incredible, it's the whole reason I'm growing them. I had one years back in a 3gallon pot, which I tried to keep small by bringing it indoors during the rough winters here, though I was kinda lazy and never went through with reading on how to overwinter them and keep them small/bush-tree-like. Ended up killing it more or less, the following season I brought it out and it never took, so I just scrapped the idea. Time to do it right. 8)

I'm also asking myself how to overwinter mine.
Can they overwinter at all? Planning on putting it in a non freezing greenhouse. I'm so newbie at all this :lol:

They overwinter very well, hardy plants, I think ill put mine in the ground soon, its huge after only 3 week!

Haha what a difference with my little datura :d Brugmansia is just another plant compared.
For winter, maybe its the roots that may not be froozen? Your roots will be deep by then I presume.

First flower became a tiny seed pod, second flower showing, smelling just as holy :thumb_up:
