An Ayahuasca brew usually consists of two components: a MAO Inhibitor (usually b. Cappi vine, or Syrian Rue) and a DMT containing plant (Mimosa Hostilis, Psychotria viridis). When ingested together, the MAO Inhibitor blocks metabolism of the nn-DMT and other alkaloids that exist in the plant, causing it to be psychoactive. The difference between the two is when people talk about Aya, they are usually talking about the brew/tea. When people mention nn-DMT, they are usually talking about a freebase extracted from the plant material.
