someone should really experiment substituting sodium hydroxide with sodium carbonate and naptha with ethanol??? that would help me out some if i had some reliable results
not to be a bummer, but i dont think anyone that is having a lot of success with their current tek is going to switch to something else to compare. if its not broke, dont fix it.
what is stopping you from getting these supplies? if you live in the US it may take trying a few home improvement stores before you find them, but you'll find them. i have to get my lye and naphtha from two different stores, on the opposite side of town from eachother at that.

Well you couldn't just substitute so simply, as the nature of the products, especially ethanol which will mix with water.
Just rinsing the bark with straight ethanol will pull far too much, but you can base with sodium carbonate with the bark as a pastey mix then pull with d-limonene.
That's using lime instead of sodium carbonate, but if you browse the wiki you can see a lot has been try and is now in use by many and with good results.
