I remember my youth when I was fervently passionate about hardstyle (and later hardcore and gabber) for a good few years, doing lots of untested and questionable drugs and having an absolute blast. This is the closest I've come to donk, stuff like this:

Nowadays, however, I find it very difficult to enjoy this type of music. For some reason it feels abrasive and very exhausting to me. Almost in a "I'm too old for this sh*t" way

Funny thing is, I was already "too old" for donk when I first got into it - even if I was mixing bouncy hard house into acid techno in the late '90s, like these two tracks (skip the run-in and run out, they're from the vinyl era)

but it's still highly amusing to jump around the kitchen to. For hanging up the washing, I prefer something more serious, like The Prodigy

I really enjoy House music and Drum & Bass/Jungle, but can’t say this style of music does it for me… I can see the appeal, though… it’s kind of like if you stripped the “transformational” festival scene of all pretentiousness, kicked up the BPM, ramped up the intake of insufflated stimulants, and required a mandatory buzz cut to join the rave haha

You likely have a point - it's less a matter of artistic merit and more that I find it ridiculous, which somehow appeals to my sense of humour.
