Drinking 3 month old Ayahuasca?

Migrated topic.

A friend of mine is trying Ayahuasca for the first time. Not only that - it's also her first psychedelic experience.

I have 3 month old Mimosa Hostilis brew (without any maoi in the liquid) who been kept in a sealed glass bottle in a refrigerator for the duration.

Is it cool to consume? Or should I trash it?`

Best Regards

Would you consume any other plant matter that has been in your fridge for a quarter of a year?

I would drink the brew myself without hesitation despite it being that old. But due to giving it to someone else i'm more concerned about the brew potency and what not.

The easy answer to this – skipping the not-insignificant fermentation issues and what-not – is that mimosa is basically a terrible suggestion for first-time "aya" IME.

I wouldn't dream of giving that to anybody, especially for their first experience.

I appreciate pickings are likely lean in Scandinavia, but maybe extract and do pharma instead?

That would be an act of friendship...unlike a swig of mouldy mimosa

If the container is sealed air-tight, and kept at cold temperature, it can actually be stored for quite a long time...

I have had yagé sit in my fridge for years, when it came time for consumption it was dumped into a pot on the stove and heated to destroy any microorganisms, germs, mold, fungi, etc...it worked fine.

Mckenna has some interesting stories in this area, most involving old ayahuasca which he brought with him back from the Amazon, but I can't find the transcriptions...

Though for a person's first exposure I don't feel this would be appropriate.

I recall many years ago, it was the night of a total eclipse, or Some hellish thing in the sky, a total eclipse of some kind, and Sun-water and adelle, who some of you may know, and I decided we would do this ayahuasca that I had in the back of the refrigerator for years, and this was like a long time ago, maybe 8 years ago, and I got it out, and I couldn't remember whether Don Fidel had said "always shake the bottle", or "never shake the bottle", so I thought to be safe we should shake the bottle, in case that's what he did say, so I did, and...and, you know, I've never had it hit me so hard, and we were...i had put on a record which I had previously found mildy entertaining, and the goal of the first 40 minutes of this ayahuasca trip became to survive the playing of this record, I mean it was so...I don't know, I have had other experiences, a friend of mine brought me a tape from tribal Afghanistan that I listened to one night in Hawaii on ayahuasca and I became so alarmed and freaked out and... I just... I could hear something in this music that just shouldn't have been there, I could hear that this wasn't wizened rag-heads in mud huts...(inaudible)...these guys connections to the Martians musician union of....(inaudible)......it was highly agitating.... -terence McKenna

I could not find this mckenna rap transcribed anywhere, yet I frequently would find my self referencing it, saying "mckenna once said...", finally I found the audio file and transcribed myself...some parts were very difficult to hear due to the crowd laughing or drowning him out, aside from the few sections labeled "inaudible" the transcription is word for word.

should be fine, id bring it to a light heat until it smells ok, but I'm not really into drinking fermented brews

@eg i also reference this snippet :) thanks for the transcription, o translinguistic amigo

Ive had mimosa brews mold in less time than that. Check for mold and reboil to kill anything else off if you do decide to drink it. But I'd just brew more, it doesnt take long..

Actually, if anybody wants to weigh in on the inaudible portions and improve my initial transcription it would be much appreciated. At 1:56 I believe the question which terence is responding to is asked, possibly just before that, at 2:05 or 2:06 I begin transcribing terence's response.

I'm reminded of an experiment preformed by Louis Pasteur, in 1864, he was attempting to disprove spontaneous generation (which he did), however there were also some interesting observations regarding microbial growth which could be made

Any way, Pasteur developed a special flask with a curved neck, he boiled the contents of the flask, sterilizing them, and then, after a year at room temperature in an open vessel there was no microbial growth...that is until he broke the special neck of his flask allowing microorganisms access to the solution inside.
*picture attached

Pasteur showed that his flask was free from microorganisms, even though it was open to the air. For a year, there was no microbial growth. Until Pasteur broke the neck of the flask. -quoted from the Pasteur link mentioned above

While the above may not be fully related, I thought it was an interesting note regarding microbial growth

Any way, under proper conditions, microorganisms, and fermentation* should be non-issues, or at least very minimal.

I have found that if the solution is poured into a clean container right after boiling and filtering was completed, and was then sealed in this air-tight container and kept at relatively cold temperatures, that there will be no noticeable growth of microorganisms, or fermentation, (however a re-boil before consumption is always encouraged just to be safe. )

*Fermentation is a metabolic process with produces gases, acids, or alcohols

I'm not recommending that any person consume old ayahuasca, though personally I have done it before without issue.

I´ve taken ayahuasca stored in the fridge for 14 months and it was ideed very active.
The maestro ayahuasquero had left it in a plastic coca cola bottle inside a regular black plastic bag.
Before taking it we just added some water and brought it to a gentle boiling for about 20-25 minutes.
No change in flavor was noted.
Also drank a MHRB/Peganum Harmala potion after 6-7 weeks stored at room temperature and even after a 30 minutes simmer the flavor was absolutely disgusting.
